If you are conservative, then why are you conservative?
If you are American then I'll extend this to republican.
Please give me your most thoughtful and justified response.
Feel free to mention individual policies, but I may find it more useful if you go along the ideology tack.

I am a registered Republican because the Democratic party, in my opinion, has too many constituencies with their own respective agendas. Everyone cannot be satisfied at once. The Republicans, again in my opinion, have an agenda that is more succinct.
Also, since LBJ might have made many southern Democrats become southern Republicans, by signing the school integration act in 1964, I believe southerners have an orientation that reflects America's sovereignty, rather than being a nation in a body of nations. I prefer a strong America militarily, and the Republicans seem to understand that, in my opinion, better than the orientation of the Democratic Party.
In my worst moments of daymares (nightmares while one is awake), I see the Democratic Party putting America's interest in the same basket with Europe. And, other than Britain, I do not think (continental) Europe has a high regard for America, unless it is getting something from her.
By the way, I am a social liberal though. So, minorities of all persuasions should not think all Republicans are against them. I just see minorities making the American fabric more exotic, rather than the historical plain vanilla (nothing beautiful about a plucked chicken).

Perhaps we're being a bit general? One of the problems we're facing in this country is the tendency to stereotype...

Just as fascist/government hating repubs have a personality disorder?
@The Pentacle Queen,
Through long, personal experience, PQ, I've discovered that if I want something, I have to pay for it. If I borrow for those payments, I have to pay that back, too. You can extend the concept way beyond paying cash for groceries.
As ALV notes, this fundamental idea has hardly begun to penetrate every Republican mind in the country.
