@ehBeth,
yeah, thankgod for all the immigrants. otherwise the dutch food alone would be pretty disastrous. but i love indonesian and surinamese and middle eastern....plenty of all that around.

@ossobuco,
surinamese is nice. aromatic and spicy, but in an interesting (not always necessarily hot way). currie, green beans, potatoes, meat, rice, or sticky rice....and always eggs on top. lotsa green and lotsa meat.

@dagmaraka,
Sauto soup: most suitable for a late weekend brunch:

"So you simply make a good chicken broth with real chicken (bones, skin and all) with an onion, a tomato, fresh piece of ginger, fresh lemongrass (cut the stem), some chickenbroth cubes. Once it's to your taste, take out the chicken, bone it and shred (not cut!) the meat. Fry the meat crispy, set aside in a bowl. Also put all the abovementioned ingredients in separate bowls. Keep the broth hot.
To prepare a bowl, put a bit of each ingredient in a bowl, pour the hot stock over it. Eat with more chili sauce (sambal) or a mix of ketjap asin (dark syrupy soy sauce, the salt variety) and freshly chopped hot chili."

@dagmaraka,
Damn, I'm going to have to start growing some lemongrass (not handily available at the closer markets here).

@ossobuco,
I recall artunbound describing some Surinamese dishes back at Abuzz. His mother was Surinamese.

Fried onions and potatoes (with rice wine vinegar added for simmer, cumin, garlic, oregano, and cayenne).

OJ.

1/2 a bottle of Mountain Dew, scavenged from car. No coffee in house, no black or green tea neither...

@patiodog,
Ay, that sounds good.

For me, scrambled eggs and toast. Probably will put a few chopped 'sicilian' olives in the eggs.

Just working on the coffee now (yes, it's about to run out).

@patiodog,
something we don't do often : after our morning swim we had only 30 minutes to get to the doctor for our flushot - not enough time to get home for breakfast - stopped at tim horton's for dutchies and shared a cup of coffee !
did have a banana as soon as we got home .

A toasted, buttered spicy fruit muffin, with a generous of spread of raspberry jam. Plus many cups of English Breakfast tea. And a garlic & horseradish tablet. (I have a nose drippy cold.)
