You've got four of the five, mac (that's a yes to Citizen Kane). For the Scotland Yard detective, think of a movie with a one-word title that's a noun, but that is sometimes turned into a verb to describe what one of the characters in the movie tries to do to another character.
Drama Critic - Citizen Kane, maybe
Congressman - The Farmer's Daughter
Serial Murderer - Shadow of A Doubt
Artist - Portrait of Jenny
Scotland Yard Detective - Gaslight

Thank you. I do try. I liked that hint about the 40s. What's that Ronnie Milsap song? (Stuck in the 50s) That's me. (lol)
Mac. I'm thinking about your question.

The films in my question range from 1944 to 1962. The earliest one was the actress' debut film.

Robert Preston
Member of Foreign Legion - Beau Geste
Plantation owner - Mame
Salesman - The Music Man
Owner of football team - Semi-Tough
Nightclub performer - Victor/Victoria
Whew! that was tough! Mostly because I started off with the plantation owner - had to rule out a lot of actors!

Yes to Robert Preston. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make it tough, but since I said salesman instead of conman, and nightclub performer for Victor/Victoria, I admit it was pretty sneaky. It was a tie-in to Angela Lansbury. (Dark at the Top of the Stairs)
