Hint: I'm looking for a famous actor who won Best Actor Award a few months before he died.

Sorry, Raggedy, I'm not going to be able to play much today. I've got too much work. Sad I'll stick my nose in every now and then to keep an eye on the Add-a-letter game.

Did you watch the Oscars? There were some surprises!

Thanks for the huge hint, Raggedy. I thought about your question off and on all day yesterday and couldn't come up with anything, but your hint led me to Henry Fonda:

Taylor: Ash Wednesday
Bronson: Battle of the Bulge and Once Upon a Time in the West
Hepburn: War and Peace
Cagney: Mister Roberts
Newman: Sometimes a Great Notion

I'm off to lunch now -- while I'm out, I'll try to think of a question to ask when I get back, if I'm right about this.

Hi all. Sorry for the delay in responding. Henry Fonda is the right answer.
Bree, I miss Lucy because it made me smile everytime I saw it, but I also like your new avatar. I was the champion marble player in my neighborhood from the ages of 5 to 10. Laughing

Did I watch the Oscar show? I sure did. And although I hadn't seen one of the nominated movies, I enjoyed the show very much - especially Peter O'Toole and the former Oscar winners. Smile And didn't Julie Andrews look great?

Mac: Were you surprised at the winning results, or at some of the acceptance speeches? And what about the winning song? Confused

Several of us have been posting comments about the Oscars on LarryBS' Oscar picks thread (mine start on page 4):

I was stunned that Adrien Brody beat out Nicholson, Day-Lewis, Cage, and Caine. And that Roman Polanski won.

Eminem was a surprise. I was sure it would be the U2 song. The best part was that Barbra Streisand was the presenter - she seemed a bit surprised too. Very Happy

Raggedy, I kind of miss Lucy too, but I thought the new avatar was a little more of a personal statement, since, like you, I was a marbles player in my childhood (althought I was too uncoordinated to ever be a champion at it). When my mother took up needlepoint in her retirement, one of the first things she needlepointed was the Saturday Evening Post cover of the marble-playing girl that my avatar is based on. It's still hanging on the wall in my apartment.

I thought it was nice that Meryl Streep's daughter looked like she was having a good time at the Oscars, even though her mother didn't win. I had read a People magazine article a couple of months ago (before the Oscar nominations were announced) that quoted Meryl Streep as saying she hoped she was nominated this year, because her three older children had all been to the Oscars with her in years when she was nominated, but her youngest hadn't had a chance to go yet. The kid apparently told her mother she wanted to go to the Oscars because she wanted to see stars, so Meryl told her, "I'm a star." I suppose when your mother is a movie star, she seems less like a movie star and more like a mother.

This question involves titles with a common theme:

Peter O'Toole
Chow Yun Fat
Peter Sellers
Burt Lancaster

Peter O'Toole - The Lion in Winter
Chow Yun Fat - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Peter Sellers - The Pink Panther
Burt Lancaster - The Leopard

and for good measure, O'Toole and Sellers in "What's New Pussycat?"

Bree: Your Mother's needlepoint is a real "treasure" and must give you much pleasure. (I remember that Saturday Evening Post cover.)
And have you noticed that when Meryl Streep is interviewed, she acts more like a mother than a super star. I love her interviews. I thought she looked lovely last night.

Mac: Thanks for the link, but since I haven't seen any of the movies, I'll not participate. But, I will congratulate you here for guessing four of the winners. That is an achievement. The closest I've ever come is three.

Yes to the "big cats", Raggedy, and bonus points for What's New Pussycat, which I hadn't thought of!

Just got back here from a work-related interruption -- it looks like work is interfering with everyone's enjoyment of this game today!

Songs and singing:

Hackman: I Never Sang For My Father
Bogarde: I Could Go On Singing
Oberon: A Song to Remember and Night Song
Reynolds: Singin' in the Rain and The Singing Nun
Hayward: With a Song in My Heart

You got it, Bree. I was thinking of "The Singer, Not the Song" for Dirk Bogarde, but "I Could Go On Singing" is even better. Very Happy (I'm sorry for the delay. My problem has been phone interruptions)

And my problem was falling asleep on the couch immediately after dinner (must have been the post-Oscar hangover). Anyway --

Hi Ritajam. Nice to see you back here again. Good guess, however, I was thinking about "ways to say goodbye". What do you think? We'll have to wait for Bree's reply. Very Happy

Robert Donat - Goodbye, Mr. Chips
Jennifer Jones - A Farewell to Arms
Red Buttons - Sayonara
Jean Simmons - Kiss the Bride Goodbye

If by any chance I'm correct, I'll pass on asking the next question. Sad I have an appointment this morning.

Raggedy is right about "ways to say goodbye". I was thinking of So Long at the Fair, but Kiss the Bride Goodbye is even better.
