I doubt my car, which was born in 1992, has a place for such a gadget?

The gadget plugs into the cigarette lighter hole. Nothing fancy Smile I got it at Best Buy for $40 I think.

I hear iPhones are horrible. everyone I know has had problems with them (like hardware and software defects) that somehow managed to sneak past the warranty, as if apple knew they were gonna break down. I find cell phones come in handy a lot of the time, especially text messaging for when I'm busy, but I don't think an iPhone is worth it. Especially not the big bucks you have to put out just to get one!

@Goamey,
haven't had problems with mine, and it was actually cheaper than a blackberry would have been.

@Goamey,
My iPhone/iPod is the most fun gadget I've every bought. Usually I get bored with new gadgets within the first few hours, never more than a day (once I've explored all the options they have I get bored with them). But I've had my iPod for several months now and I still use it regularly. Not only does it give me full wireless internet access all around my house, but it's got an endless stream of little apps which can be loaded (either free or for a few bucks) which keep it entertaining. The touch-screen interface is simply unbeatable. I've had no hardware or software problems with the device (I recommend rebooting it after installing new apps however).

@dlowan,
I don't understand, you just set up your usual email accounts, right?

@rosborne979,
Huh?

This isn't email, this is phone texting.

Or, in my case, it isn't.

It seems to be sending it, then gives an error message.

I need to get it to a shop...thingt is finding the time.

I don't text much, anyway.

@dlowan,
Maybe it's because I have the iPod instead of the iPhone. But both iPod and iPhone can handle full blown Email, just like your regular computer, so I'm not sure why you wouldn't just use that function instead of "Texting".

@rosborne979,
Because many of my friends don't have phones that accept email...and many don't use email anyway.

@rosborne979,
Yep, for us plebs with non-web or web simple phones, texting is so so so so much easier. Of course, I could text to deb's e-mail, and she could respond and it would come to my text, but then I'd have to treat her differently than everybody in my address book, and what a pain in the ass that would be.

I was anti-text when I first got the phone (only a couple of years ago; I'm late to the cell phone game), but it is so damn convenient for "working late can you let dogs out?" or "we're at Blue Moon, have table upstairs" sorts of messages. Much better suited to them than phone calls and certainly better suited than having to check voice mail...

@dlowan,
But you can use email to send a text message to anyone's phone, and any text message can be sent to your email address. I guess I don't understand the problem. Sorry.

I need to vent my frustration with the iPhone's autocorrection feature.

Apple's software engineers just can't seem to get it into their well-designed, user-friendly heads that some people in the world speak multiple languages. Thus, when I text-message to Germans, my iPhone "corrects" every other word I write with a nonsense English word that happens to be similarly spelled. Likewise, when I fill out a form on an American website, it corrects every other word I write with a nonsense German one.

But that's not all, because Steve Jobs decided to add insult to my injury. I could live with the autocorrect feature if at least it was easy to ignore. Iphone would offer the correction, I'd just keep on writing, no harm done. But nooooo -- Apple programmed the iPhone to assume that when in doubt, the iPhone is right and the user is wrong. So every time I finish a correctly spelled English words, my iPhone not only suggests that bogus German word -- it automatically substitutes it for what I have typed!

Is there any way to turn off the autocorrect feature, or at least to ask iPhone that it kindly respect the user's spelling by default?

Grrrrrrrr!

@dlowan,
That's strange. It's probably an early prototype without the advanced user-chicanery feature set.

@rosborne979,
My iPhone email only works when it can grab an internet connection...which is not often.

I hardly ever use the mobile, but if I am calling/texting from it, it is because I need to be in contact with someone quickly. I can't drive around searching for a net connection, nor is there any benefit if I am waiting for messages until I get either home or to an internet connection my phone can grab.

I don't get why you don't get it.

@Thomas,
I bought it from Optus, my mobile providor.

I shall take it to an Optus shop to try to get the bastard to text properly.

@dlowan,
Good. We wouldn't want you to be stuck with a device of mere, mundane usability. (How quaint!)
