can someone tell me how the name of citizens from a specific place (eg: halifax) get named "haligonians"?

more egs: toronto - torontonians?
london - londoners?
windsor - windsorites?
vancouver - vancouverites?

are there any rules about how the suffix is determined? ites vs onians vs oners?

If there's any rule at all, I'm sure it's to use what sounds right, like Trannies for those from Toronto.
