I would have to counter many of the assertions in the article by pointing out the number of Americans who believe that a certain charlatan in Virginia turned a hurricane away wiht prayer, continue to send him money so that he can pray for the deaths of supreme court justices, and and send him money so that he can cure their illnesses.
Wasn't there another one who said that god would kill him if his followers didn't send in money? The follower sent in money, he isn't dead. God works in mysterious ways!
And then there are the folks who see every word of a compilation of myth, literature,and political exegesis as literally true. Hmmm...what advanced people.

As for the grinding poverty, corruption, violence, illiteracy, etc... I wonder if the author of the piece has ever visited any of America's larger cities?
