psssst, hinge ... that was me, Olgs, not Deb.

I was simply responding to your statement that a disproportionate number of Australians voted. I agree with you that most Americans wouldn't give a toss about our elections, but WE certainly give a toss about theirs, because our Oz governments tend to blindly follow wherever the US leads. So the more enlightened this next government is, the better for us!Very Happy

sorry - i feel like a **** for saying it.

I guess i just don't trust the democrats after they were given the power to reign in Bush (by the people) and chose not to do so.

And I've kept hearing Obama say things i don't agree with (the latest being his support of the bail-out).

And every time another Republican endorses him the feeling gets worse.

Actually, the man i really saw as the best person for the job of President was Dennis Kucinich - but he was 'dumped' ages ago.

I worry that Obama will simply tow the line and the industrial/war crooks will continue to pull all the strings.

Hope I'm wrong.

If i believed in God i would pray that i am wrong.

I think there'd be a number of US A2Kers who'd agree with that. Dys being one of them.

@Endymion,

Raimondo writes

"Yet the electoral process is rigged, in this country: the system permits only two political parties. All others must overcome enormous obstacles to achieve ballot status. This give the War Party maximum elbow room to manipulate the political process behind the scenes, and allows them to exercise their dictatorship in a "democratic" fashion. The two-party monopoly gives the War Party a strategic advantage: it merely has to split itself in two, amoeba-like, so that both officially-recognized "major" parties" simply become the "right" and "left" wings of a single party " the War Party. "

That seems so.

Myself as well.

I really don't expect the Obama presidency to be all that different from any other, but hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'm interested about why you have to hold your nose, ehBeth. You've no doubt said it before here, but I'd still like to know .... if you feel so inclined, of course!

he was/is too far to the right for my liking. If he was a candidate here, I'd certainly be able to find someone more to my political taste. In the U.S., where the major choices are right and further right, I'd have a seriously difficult time finding a candidate to support.

He was a lesser evil candidate. I'm not quite a BoGoWo-level left libertarian, but I'm in his vicinity on the political spectrum.

Yes, Kucinich was an interesting candidate. I could have voted for him with a reasonable amount of happiness.

looking back some years , it is interesting to note that the "allied military government" in germany made sure that a variety of different parties would be able to exist in germany . the various combinations of alliances that have reigned in state governments and the federal governments have been very diverse . in the hamburg "state" government a governing coalition of "black" (christian-democatic union) and "greens" is currently the reigning government .
germany also does not have the "first-past-the-post" election system , allowing smaller parties (and their constituents ) an outlet for their views - and eventually be able to obtain seats in the parliament .
the "greens" started out as a small movemant but were eventually able to send representatives into parliament .
that is next to impossible in a "first-past-the-post" election system (such as in canada) .
