The Good Old Days Are About Over

and I'm not talking about the good old days in the 50's when you could drink water out of the garden hose and hitchhike without fear of being chopped up.

I'm talking about the days of the orgy of consumption, the mall, gas guzzling vehicles, sex without accountability, free range Captialism, and ability to treat the planet as though we were the only country on it that mattered, ez credit and probably even the ability to speak our mind anytime and anywhere without fear.

It was great to live my entire life in those times and i will treasure every last moment of it as those times wind down.

JMO.

@mismi,
I am actually a glass half full kind of guy...that's why I'm thankful I lived in the short window where everything was so great.

As long as I can still take a dump in my apartment building's single washing machine without consequence, everything is going to be just fine.

Right! Let's see, you lived through the Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf War, and the invasion of Iraq. Not to mention Grenada and Panama. Where do we go from here?

@roger,
I was an infant in the korean war....but infants were dying of tb and polio....
I actively protested the Viet Nam war and still truly believe I was part of the movement to change perception and cause that clusterfuck to end.... AND during that time I discovered the best music ever made... had a great time and got immeasurable amounts of pussy...and saw tb, polio and other diseases virtually vanish and the beginning of painless dentistry...hitched across the country and slept in the desert without fear...was able to choose and live the lifestyle I wanted without compromise or education and still make a good living... enjoyed freedoms to an extent never enjoyed anywhere at any time... made and watched 5 children ( that I know of) I love grow.... met (after several tries) a woman I am devoted to and would die for... did basically exactly as I pleased and achieved success at it. Saw more sights and had more experiences both good and bad than most people ever have... and have rarely kissed anyone's ass for a paycheck or anything else for that matter. I've escaped death through luck several times and have, with a couple of exceptions enjoyed good health and boundless energy.

It's been a great run.

you know what I mean... the worst thing that could happen to you could be fixed with a shot until the mid 80's.

@mismi,
Nothing Really changes Mismi.

For my grand-parents there were rich people who did pretty well, and poor people who didn't do so well. There was new technology (Automobiles) that changed the world as well as a grave Menace (the Germans). There were disagreements and political strife and whining about government and the economy-- but things just went on anyway.

For my parents there were rich people who did pretty well, and poor people who didn't do so well. There was new technology (TV) that changed the world as well as a grave menace (The Communists). There were disagreements and political strife and whining about government and the economy-- but things just went on anyway.

Now there are rich people who are doing pretty well, and poor people who aren't doing so well. There is new technology (the Internet) that changed the world as well as a grave menace (The Terrorists). There are disagreements and political strife and whining about government and the economy-- but things go on anyway.

I suspect my kids will follow the same pattern as always.

I precede you by a bit and enjoyed growing up in the 50's when you could leave the keys in your car right there on main street while you went shopping, where kids ran free in the neighborhood and parents didn't worry about anybody snatching or molesting them, where neighbors hollered and walked on in because the doors were always unlocked, where we could sleep with the windows and sometimes the doors wide open on hot summer nights with no fear that we would be robbed or murdered in our sleep. The boys took their shotguns to school because they would go hunting right after the 3 o'clock class. There was no panic, no school lockdown. As often as not the teachers or principle would compare their guns with the kids. And nobody worried about somebody shooting somebody else.

But I remember my mother saying that she just didn't think people in her youth were as unhappy and wound up tight as they are 'now'. She thought it was better then. My mother-in-law said she didn't worry too much about what she named her kids because the world had gotten so bad she didn't expect there to be a world by the time the kids were grown.

My kids grew up in a different era and have different great memories. I feel bad for the young ones just beginning now, but I bet they'll remember their growing up fondly too.

I guess I'm from the glass is twice as big as it has to be school. Smile

@Foxfyre,
kids in time past didn't have access to every bloody nasty 24 hour news cycle readily available info that kids today are.... of course they're wound up tight. Kids are easy to scare and easy to influence. We are stealing their childhood.

@Bi-Polar Bear,
About 70% of my life has been much better than I could have dreamt about in my youth, and most of it happened after I could enjoy sex. No complaints from here.

@roger,
Optimists believe we live in the best of all possible worlds.

Pessimists fear this is true.
