John McCain's racist remark very troubling

SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER
On his campaign bus recently, Sen. John McCain told reporters, "I hated the gooks. I will hate them as long as I live." Although McCain said he was referring only to his prison guards, there are many reasons why his use of the word "gook" is offensive and alarming.
It is offensive because by using a racial epithet that has historically been used to demean all Asians to describe his captors, McCain failed to make a distinction between his torturers and an entire racial group.
It is alarming because a major candidate for president publicly used a racial epithet, refused to apologize for doing so and remains a legitimate contender.

@JTT,
I'm so sooo pleased he's gonna lose.
@JTT,
JTT, In defense of McCain, I must tell you that I wrote to McCain about his use of that word, and he promised not to ever use it again. But we must remember that that was the "old" McCain who I would have voted for in this election if he were the same man. He isn't.
@JTT,
March 2000? Timely reporting.
If you had .1% of the balls McCain has, you might be someone to be taken seriously!
@Woiyo9,
How old was McCain in 2000? How old is he now? How likely is it that kind of ...attitude... disappears just in time to think about running for President?
@Eorl,
Don't be so naive to think that someone who was a POW would forgive and forget the actions of the guards, which is who he was referring to.

indeed, I hate germans and japs and wops.
@dyslexia,
Were you a POW ? Or are you just trying to be funny?
@dyslexia,
Do you mean Krauts, Japs and Wops?
i can see where a guy would have a certain amount of... uh, well the only word that seems right is hatred, for an enemy who went out of their way to torture you during time in a pow camp. and as far as i can remember, "gook" was a word generally used for the vietnamese who, like the iraqis, took food, money and goodwill with one hand and strapped hand grenades to babies with the other.
to his credit, mccain did have the cajones to stand up about the u.s. using torture.
@DontTreadOnMe,
Except McCain approved the legislation that authorized torture.
That when he lost total respect.
@DontTreadOnMe,
Alll the grunts in Viet Nam called the Viet Cong "gooks" just as the soldiers in World War II called the Germans- Nazis--The Japanese _slant eyes and the Italians-Wops. There is nothing new there, but the soldiers reserved their "gook" term for the VeitNamese.

I'm not. You want a guy with that kind of baggage (not to mention tact) running the world?
I hate moths too. They eat holes in my oriental rugs. Unless it's carpet beetles. I hate carpet beetles as well.
And the Vietnamese guards hated American flyers who flew over at 10,000 feet and dropped bombs on their wives and children and grandmothers and killed them, in their own country. There's enough hate to go around, and everybody's got a reason.
