Just heard on the news tonight, that NYC Mayor Bloomberg is flying some of his staff down to the Bahamas tomorrow (on his private jet, of course) to check out some retired cruise ships. He wants them to consider the possibility of turning them into shelters for the homeless. As one homeless advocate was quoted on the news, "They are probably a lot nicer than what the city's been using."
When we occasionally elect a non-politician to office, we occasionally get someone who comes up with some different solutions to the same old problems.
Hope it works out. I'm going to admit that my first thought was the old Al Capp gag about the House Committee on Unamerican Activities - where better to investigate unamerican activities that Paris?
Pardon me for throwing that in there. It is an example of 'thinking outside the box' - not one of my all time favorite phrases.
Good idea - long as they keep the boat afloat.
roger -- before I heard the WHOLE story (just heard the part about the plane trip to the Bahamas), I was thinking along the same lines.
One thing about Mr. Bloomberg, though --he disappears most weekends (flies off to his house in Bermuda for the weekend). Initially, the press was really upset cause they didn't know where he was and he wouldn't tell them where he was going and it annoyed them a whole bunch. Now they know and have just accepted the fact that he's lousy rich and the mayor and he doesn't need the press and can do pretty much what ever he wants to do. He's not taking a salary and he's not even living in Gracie Manison (lives in his own digs) and I'm sure he's paying for all his own travel.
That lends much crediblilty to the entire project.
Yeah, now if he can just figure out a way to bail out the city from its financial mess (other than taxing commuters the same as residents)...
Absolutely!!
Get those folks out of there who have been there for awhile!
We need turnover, baby, turnover in our elected positions!
Do what's right!
Vote against the incumbent!
maxsdadeo -- I'm talking even more than just getting rid of incumbents here. I'm talking bringing in honest-to-goodness non-politicians. Trouble is, if they aren't really politicians they can't afford to run unless they are lousy rich. Lousy rich is okay when it means you won't take money from the government, but I'm not sure lousy rich can truly represent ME. But on the other hand, politician certainly doesn't represent ME.
I wholeheartedly concur, bandylu.
As would, I imagine, most logical folks.
Unfortunately, we are in the minority.
Now ain't that the truth.
Onto the ships and out of mind?
Off the streets and then we don't need to think about them anymore?
We were talking this evening about how nasty some of those ships can be....
Piffka, they were putting them in a former detention center last summer. The ships have to be better than that.
Maybe. The "poor" will certainly have problems getting off of them. They'll be dangerous in storms. What about ventilation and heating?? I'd certainly rather be on dry land... and I like to go a'boating.
I hope they take into consideration all the flu conditions on the boats! I just wonder if this isn't a political boon doggle?
