That was good. Hands down that was a win for Biden, but Palin did what she had to do to reassure her base. I think McCain will get an uptick from this. Maybe 2 points.

Was anyone else offended when Palin mentioned Biden's deceased wife to make one of her points? I thought it was in horribly bad taste.

@engineer,
I missed that. Do you mean when she said his wife was a teacher? I thought she meant his current wife.

@FreeDuck,
Good point. But I guess you and I have heard everything they're saying already anyway, so maybe it's not so urgent anymore to come to an unspoiled conclusion of our own about the debate. The question now is all about - what are those uncommitted voters taking away from this?

At least that's really the only thing I'm interested in anymore ... the answers of these McCains and Bidens (or Obamas and Palins), I can usually guess them before they make them anyway ... or maybe I'm too cynical.

I don't know about that. I agree that Biden won hands down. I'd go further and say he well outperformed my expectations. My fourteen year old look over and said "he's a really good debater." Since he wasn't overly impressed by the Presidential debate, I thought that was an interesting statement.

I thought Palin had some good lines, but I thought she tended to verbosity on some of the questions and was noticeably off topic. Of course, the goal is to speak about what you want regardless of the question, but she was very obvious about it. I thought her line about Biden's wife was pretty bad, but maybe that's my southern side showing. You just don't try to score points off your opponent's dead wife.

Biden wowed me and I didn't expect that. He was on point for every question, facts and figures handy. He was assertive in dismissing Palin's charges without showing rancor. He spoke directly without weasel words, attacked McCain aggressively and supported Obama wholeheartedly.

I think the bounce will be in Obama's direction.

Something to the effect of "Your wife was a teacher, and I understand she's passed on..." I'll have to check the transcript when available.

@nimh,
The fan-o-meter has been quite the eye opener. I mean, I know where I am and that McCain and Palin are out of step with me on taxes and health care, for example. But apparently they are out of step with a lot of people. The fan-o-meter did not like McCains health care plan and did not agree with Palin when she said that paying taxes is not patriotic. That is a pretty big sea change for Americans, I think. Of course, we are not talking about all Americans, just Ohio uncommitted voters, but it is still interesting.

I think its that thing I mentioned earlier. She has this thing she does that I am having trouble describing. Its like "you betcha" and "doggonit" (which she actually just said). Scrunchy nose and a punch in the arm.

It's colloquial. It rather annoys me.

But not as much as Biden annoys me.

I think she managed to do good for women in general. As McCain said, all we women need is more education in order to make equal pay. Since she did so well with her schooling from the men of the McCain campaign, I'm sure she'll be getting a call from John now saying he's submitting legislation to ensure his senatorial salary and her gubernatorial salaries are equal.

@engineer,
Biden was calmer than I'd been expecting. As I commented after the first presidential debate, I was glad I watched/listened - made my own decisions about what I was seeing/hearing.

@engineer,
Biden wowed me too. He really is excellent.

Dont get me wrong, she didnt do anything for me. And that "you betcha" grated on my nerves. But I think that her performance will reaffirm some soft McCain supporters and get him a small bump.

That must be a crack-filled cigar there, Tico. Palin did well to not fall flat on her face. But she didn't win a single question. Her answers were full of platitudes and 'dontcha knows' and winks and little punches, and no specifics on policy at all.

@Ticomaya,
You say win Palin and you ask me what I am smoking? It must have been that scholarly answer on the powers of the vice president.

@FreeDuck,
In the Vice President debate, Sarah Palin established a new word to replace the over used "like."

The majority of her sentences ended or restarted with "also." Her "also" broke up her babbling to fill time.

No train wreck. They each managed to look at their scripts. I thought they were pretty even through most of the "debate." Biden, if there was any scoring that mattered, did better towards the end and probably "won." But it will, in my opinion, matter not a whit in the grand scheme of things.
I did find her constant grinning, through discussions of Isreal, Palistan. the economy, a little off-putting. But that is just me.

I say McCain wins that round, just because Palin was not a complete failure.

With expectations so low, she just needed to speak english, and mostly... she did.
