A series of floating shelves stair-stepping up the wall could work:

They'd need to be shorter than the ones pictured, and go all the way up.

You could even make some of them ramps.

@DrewDad,
It'd be a catwalk!

I'd prefer no brackets, myself.

Yeh, like the floating shelves.. or even good looking non-floating shelves, say with brackets of some style.

Well, crap. Here I thought I was being all original.

Perhaps this isn't applicable to this thread, but it does have to do with cats and I thought the idea was quite creative...

Here's the link to that ourdoor cat walk article.. which in my memory was a much longer/more descriptive article (but maybe not).
http://www.latimes.com/features/printedition/home/la-hm-cat5-2008jun05,0,7728807.story

quoting, "Angel pauses in the cat run on the roof of the Gottlieb home. Viewing platforms wind up to the roof for bird-watching and sunbathing."

@ossobuco,
Osso, I've been thinking of something like that for Dante. He loves to get out, but all the birds here would be in great peril with Dante's penchant for attack.

That article lead me to another about Porsche that I emailed to Bob.

You are a fine source of goodies.

That's exactly what one of my imagined solutions looked like. Nice!

@Diane,
Porsches? I saw some blurb about cat urine. And apparently the Gottliebs have the wildlife store in Venice, after I left. How dare they....

kidding, but wondering, I might know exactly where it is. Ah well.

@Robert Gentel,
Drewdad found it.

I am mightily impressed!!!!

But I think it merits more than one cat....

@dlowan,
Any handy-folk here?

Will those sorts of shelves work when one has gyprock walls?

Leaving aside cats, they'd be super-cool above one's bed.

(I have far too many books to think of them as a book solution.)

@dlowan,
I still never hang anything (much, anyway) away from the studs. Studs = no worry, my lady. Get a studfinder, or I can mail you one, having two, one I don't need. Very useful over time. I don't care what dipshit thing they say at the box stores..
