Gateway lap top computer won't turn on

Gateway lap top purchased for college daughter August 2007. Will charge up but when you turn the power button on - the computer won't come on. What's wrong. Can this be fixed - just barely a year old lap top?

How do you know it's charged up?

I know of a company that fixes broken power connectors on laptops for $100, about a third or less than the manufacturer will charge. They are called Comprehensive Computing and they fixed one of my HP's.
