While I hate to see anybody be the victim of a possible crime, this doesnt bother me all that much, and I have no sympathy for them

Quote:
TOPEKA - The Topeka Fire Department is investigating a small fire today outside of a church whose members protest at soldier's funerals.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reports on its Web site that a fence and garage at Westboro Baptist Church became engulfed in flames early today.

Topeka Fire Marshal Greg Bailey said the cause of the fire has not been determined.

However, a spokeswoman for the church, Shirley Phelps-Roper, believes it was deliberately set.

Members of the church frequently picket military funerals, arguing that the deaths of U.S. troops overseas are part of God's punishment for the nation's tolerance of homosexuality.

Bailey said damage is estimated at $10,000.

Shame the whole church didnt burn down.

I'm flabbergasted.

I'm horrified.

I'm disgusted.

You're seriously applauding arson? "Shame the whole church didnt burn down."

Pretty short road from that to applauding bombing abortion clinics, or some other attack against someone with whom you disagree.

Sorry, DrewDad... I am with MysteryMan on this one.

Sure, deep down, I know you are right... maybe if they were faced with a natural calamity (I have always been partial to necrotizing fasciitis) we could avoid the philosophical dissonance.

I abhor arson in any form and for whatever reason. However, I do question the church's opinion that soldiers killed overseas have something to do with homosexuals here in the US. Are they saying that if we are not tolerant of gays then soldiers would not die in war?

TWISTED!

If there were no homosexuals there would be no war, pestilence, famine.... on the other hand there would be no Judas Priest, Queen or Will and Grace.

It's a wash.

Is that all this church did?

Heck! Half of the Republican party believes that God is punishing the U.S. because of gays.

What's the big deal?

No, not surprised.

These folks protest at funerals. Offensive, yes.

Which is a completely separate issue, IMO, than deserving to be burnt to the ground.

I'm not crying any crocodile tears about them having damage to their building; I'm saying that withholding sympathy and actively wishing them arm are two different things.

But I'm not wishing harm to anybody, just a building.
And the views of the church are abhorrent, disgraceful, and pure evil.
They are not christian in any sense of the word, and what they do at funerals is totally disgusting.

That certainly might be so.

I suppose, if someone thinks not too good about you, finds your doing disgustful, you'll excuse him if she/he burns down your fence and garage.

As long as they dont hurt my wife or my dog, and confine themself to burning down my fence or garage, I wouldnt mind.
I would actually thank them, especially if they burned my garage down.

This is the way criminals think.

"Nobody's gonna get hurt. They left the car unlocked so it's ok to take their CDs/wallet/stereo/whatever. I'm not actually hurting anyone."

mystery man; sometimes I think you would be better off to leave some thoughts unposted.

Number one; arson is not ever a good thing even if no one gets hurt, I think you know that but have dug yourself in a hole.

Number two; it is also true that other christian politicians have said similar things about gays being the cause of horrible tragedies. They have just not taken this angle which does bring a new ugly twist.

Number three; 'vengeance is mine sayeth the lord.'

Maybe the fire was divinely set as a sign to repent their ways. I'm sure they didn't consider that.

That's not so bad since nobody was inside the church at the time, so I agree with MM on this particular group. But out west, animal rights activists firebombed the house of a UC researcher conducting tests on laboratory mice while he and his family were inside the house; another researcher's car was firebombed, but it was empty at the time:

Quote:
In one incident, a faculty member's home on Village Circle off High Street was intentionally firebombed at about 5:40 a.m., according to police. The residence belongs to a well-known UCSC molecular biologist who works with mice. He was one of 13 researchers listed in threatening animal rights pamphlets found Tuesday in a downtown coffee shop.

In the second incident at about the same time, a Volvo station wagon parked in a faculty member's driveway on Dickens Way on campus also was firebombed, police said.
