troops withdraw at the insistence of Iraqis... bush can claim the surge and his policies for working... he can say he stayed the course which in his mind will help his legacy.... and a timetable for withdrawing in place takes away a key bargaining chip for the Obama presidency if it's already happening.... could this be an October surprise?

It's fine with me if it is. I don't think it hurts Obama -- if anything he can say, see, I was right, we can get out responsibly. With that settled the debate becomes one between Obama and McCain on domestic issues.
I agree with FreeDuck and think this would be a wonderful October Surprise.
((but I think an attack on Iran is more likely))
