TV Acting Without Sound

Have you ever watched anything on tv without the sound on?

I was sitting here and the tv was on mute. I look up and there is this apparently very dramatic, sad scene where this guy was crying.

Without the sound, it looked completely and utterly ridiculous. And acted.

With the sound, it wasn't nearly as bad.

Why is that? Is sound really that important to our sense of realism?
