The following article is a good example of what happens when people have divergent views.

Anglicans Face Wider Split Over Policy Toward Gays

By DINA KRAFT and LAURIE GOODSTEIN
Published: June 30, 2008

JERUSALEM ?- Anglican conservatives, frustrated by the continuing stalemate over homosexuality in the Anglican Communion, declared on Sunday that they would defy the church's historic lines of authority and create a new power bloc within the church led by a council of predominantly African archbishops.

The announcement came at the close of an unprecedented week-long meeting of Anglican conservatives in Jerusalem, who contend that they represent a majority of the 77 million members of the Anglican Communion.

They depicted their efforts as the culmination of an anti-colonial struggle against the church's seat of power in Great Britain, whose missionaries first brought Anglican Christianity to the developing world.

The conservatives say many of the descendants of those Anglican missionaries in Britain and North America are now following what they call a "false gospel" that allows a malleable, liberal interpretation of Scripture.

They insisted that they were not breaking away from the Anglican Communion or creating a schism. But if carried out, their plans would create severe upheaval in the Communion, the world's third largest grouping of churches after the Roman Catholic Church and Orthodox churches. After more than 1,000 delegates to the meeting at a Jerusalem hotel affirmed their platform statement, Africans, Australians, South Americans and Indians gathered for prayer, dancing and swaying to a Swahili hymn and shouted full-throated hallelujahs.

I have considered posts here regarding closed-mindedness, and fortunately my mind is open regarding this topic! I think people are right in saying that a closed mind cannot develop. So I shall try to open my mind. Try.

As for soldiers, I think that closing the mind good for those who serve you, but not you yourself.

Yes, with a closed mind your mind cannot expand yet most great minds in history must have an element of "closedness" in order for them to have conviction in their beliefs sufficient for the ability to project views with strength.

I agree. A closed mind can be a useful tool in the directing of the subconscious mind.

Exactly, but dangers of having a closed mind include a lack of tolerance of other cultures, view points and anything that differentiates you from someone else. So therefore from an anthropological point of view it is better for a society to have open minds.

a closed mind is only helpful when it is being reprogrammed or in a crisis when devoting energy to looking for reasons to reconsider what is believed would divert energy needed for survival. A open mind does not hurt determination or the ability to reach a goal so long as one goes with what they believe until they have reason to suspect that they should change their minds. always wondering, always having our mental energy sucked up by reconsidering options would be a very bad thing, which is why one should not reconsider unless new information has come in that strongly suggest that the current belief might be wrong

Depends what you mean by 'helpful'.

As a generalisation, I agree that open is better than closed.

In terms of directing the subconscious, closed isn't quite right - focused is.
