Why is everyone upset up the pink hats?

Next to Yankees caps and Giants jerseys, the pink Red Sox cap has become the most polarizing piece of clothing a Bostonian can wear. Fans of the hats think they're simply a cute way to show their love for the Sox. Haters say pink-hat owners are latecomers who only support the Sox because it's suddenly cool - even fashionable - to do so. Pink-hat wearers haven't suffered sufficiently, they reason. No one suffers in pink.

It is really strange how much of a controversy this is. There is an article in the paper today about itÂ… http://www.boston.com/lifestyle/fashion/articles/2008/06/26/why_is_this_pink_hat_so_hated/?page=1, I read and heard other such things from individuals, and in other media - radio; TV.

I don't have a pink hat; I have a more traditional hat, but I have nothing against the pink hat or any color as long as it supports the "B".

Why do they hate this innocent hat? Why is it considered that you are a lesser fan if you were pink? My daughter has a pink hat and a pink shirt that proclaims "I love Big Papi" with the love as a heart. She even has pink batting gloves and a pink glove. Even when Papi himself saw her in this shirt he commented cool shirt dude! If Papi likes it, it is good enough for me.

I don't know, but if they want to calm everybody down they will start calling it the "breast cancer" hat.

To be honest there is a rainbow of colors that you can buy in Red Sox hats. It is simply a ploy so you will buy a variety of Sox hats.

I'm thinking of getting this one: http://www.israelbookshop.com/mivahtml/Merchant2/graphics/Specials/RScap.jpg

And yes, it phonetically says Red Sox.

I think the blue cap with the red B is the symbol and color for the Red Sox. It's all marketing, I guess, but this seems over the top in promotional material. The pink hat is kinda, no not kinda it's dumb.

Also, the blue is so much more practical-- it's not going to show the dirt.

Hey, if it sells, it's not dumb.
I couldn't care less what people wear on their heads, but obviously it's working for the advertisers. People are buying. Then again, people will buy absolutely everything. Shrug. It's all blue potatoes to me.

well, to me it doesn't look any dumber than any other baseball hat

i don't care much for baseball hats altogether, but i'll keep out, as this obviously means something to the insiders. i'm an outsider looking in.

If you've been going to Fenway for years, and have seen how the "fan" base has changed, you'd know why the pink hat crowd is lumped into a stereotype.

Fenway has gone from a place where red sox fans went to watch the sox play, to a fashionable summer drinking fest for anyone who can drop the $$ to go see a game, including annoying girls who have no f'n clue what the hell is going on in the game, are not baseball fans, can only name 2 players on the team, and tell guys they're huge sox fans hoping it makes them more attractive.

Those wearing pink hats usually fit into the bandwagon-jumping stereotype. You can even ask a chick who's a real red sox fan if she has a pink hat, and see the dirty look you'll get.

That's why.

My husband agrees with what you said Slappy. See, I on the other hand think the pink hat is cute. But I have only become a fan in the last 12 years so I am a fairly new comer as well. I have a green shirt with red and white letters and a shamrock...an I have people ask me why the Red Sox have a green shirt. It's an Irish thing right? But I have all the tradish stuff as well...gifts from my husband.

And personally, I get why the young girls do that. It's a good angle. Razz And I bet the guys fall for it hook, line and sinker.

I thought that's where all this started.

Maybe I am wrong, but didn't the players wear pink something or other during a game to support breast cancer?

Wouldn't red socks get pink after they been washed many times, anyway? You know, sox isn't a word--you wanted to spell that "socks." Does red socks refer to some kind of social organization?

Pink hat, blue hat -- let's face it: ALL Red Sox fans are jerks.

There.

Controversy settled.

My daughter knows about baseballs - plays too and has attended a Big Papi batting clinic and Papi adored her. He even remembered her name at the end of the session - and everyone knows that Papi doesn't remember most names.

She sports a pink cap and she is a true red sox and baseball fan - we even attend many of the minor games in the area (because the red sox cost so damn much)! So blah to you, slappy do you know Papi on a first name basis?

they used pink bats to support breast cancer.

Pretty much in the past several years, red sox marketing had branched out and made hats, shirts in a variety of colors. I do have the traditional colors, my husband has the traditional and some other colors (see he would only have one if it wasn't for this damn marketing), my older daughter has the pink hat and my younger has the more traditional colors like mine.
