The museum Folkwang in Essen (Germany) owes its reputation to the outstanding collections of the painting and sculpture of the 19. Century, the classical modern period as well as the art after 1945 and the photography.
The important collection puts an emphasis on the German and French painting of the 19. and 20. Century.
The Avantgarde of the modern art are represented by outstanding works by Cezanne, Gauguin and van Gogh. In addition, the German romantic period (C.D. Friedrich, Carus) as well as Courbet, Daumier, Manet and Renoir are also present with masterpieces.

Wikipedia: Museum Folkwang:
Quote:
Museum Folkwang is a major collection of 19th and 20th century art in Essen, Germany. The museum was established in 1922 by merging the Essener Kunstmuseum, which was founded in 1906, and the private Folkwang Museum of the collector and patron Karl Ernst Osthaus in Hagen, founded in 1901.

The term Folkwang is taken from the Edda; Folkvangar means 'hall of the people', 'hall of the goddess Freyja'.

The museum is closed until next year, but the permanent collection has just reopened in the Villa Hügel (German Wiki link, phtos might give an idea of the building).
