Re: Gas Prices and Taxes

We need to get rid of all income and asset (read, property) taxes and convert to a consumption based model. No flat tax, no fair tax, just consumption taxes. And shrink the government by 75% while we're at it.
Why don't you find some facts before you make such idiotic statements.
Federal gas taxes are 18.4 cents. The states then charge varying amounts. Even in MI which charges a 6% sales tax on top of the federal and state gas taxes the total tax on $4 gas is about 60 cents.
.184 + .19 + (4 -(4/1.06)) =.60 or about 15% of the price.

Even Ill, the worst tax state is only 62 cents per gallon in taxes on $4 gas. 15.5% of the total price.
The higher gas goes the less of a % that is taken out in taxes. No state has had 25% of gas price being taxes since Gas was $2 a gallon.
