Gas Prices and Taxes

Approximately 25% of what you pay at the pump is tax. So, with gas at $4 the government gets $1, and we consume about 150B gallons/year. Don't you think the government can run on $150B?

We need to get rid of all income and asset (read, property) taxes and convert to a consumption based model. No flat tax, no fair tax, just consumption taxes. And shrink the government by 75% while we're at it.

Why don't you find some facts before you make such idiotic statements.
Federal gas taxes are 18.4 cents. The states then charge varying amounts. Even in MI which charges a 6% sales tax on top of the federal and state gas taxes the total tax on $4 gas is about 60 cents.

.184 + .19 + (4 -(4/1.06)) =.60 or about 15% of the price.

Even Ill, the worst tax state is only 62 cents per gallon in taxes on $4 gas. 15.5% of the total price.

The higher gas goes the less of a % that is taken out in taxes. No state has had 25% of gas price being taxes since Gas was $2 a gallon.

The $27 bilion a year the federal government gets from gas taxes wouldn't pay for the war in Iraq let alone anything else.

Suck it up instead of whining.

So, if I take your numbers, assuming MI is fairly average since gas is about $4 everywhere, then at 60-cents/gallon it would be about $90B/year, not the $25B you claim.

If you consider the taxation on everything that goes into producing a gallon of gas, it really comes up closer to $1/gallon, and the $150B I originally opined.

What school did you go to? I want to make sure I don't send my kids there.

Hey Mr smarty pants. Is all the gas in the US sold in Michigan?

Yeah.. you don't want your kids to realize that the US is made up of 50 states or that states have taxes seperate from the Federal government.

The Federal government gets $0.184 on every gallon sold in the US. The states get the rest at various rates. (Michigan and Illinois being the 2 highest at the moment.) 150billion gallons multiplied by .184 is not 90billion. Maybe you can ask a 3rd grader to help you out with the math. It seems to be eluding you.

I know. It is an outrage that I support doing math the proper way.

You should try it some time. It isn't so bad really.
