Some of the "window" units actually stand on the floor, with hoses that go through the window.

Hmm, the link says "this product not available" when I click on it. Maybe it's going fast. Or my computer.

Off brands..

worth the money?

Im asking because, for the sake of keeping a line of credit open, we have a small account with conns.. a semi local rip off rent to own kind of store.

Our tv is financed through them simply so that we can have some kind of active credit line.
I do not plan on paying for the tv before it is due.. and I could reasonably add on another 30.00 to that payment each month to equal about 70.00 a month.

At 30.00 a month, I am looking at AC units , window only, from them for around 400.00 and as high as 18,000 btus.

Ultimately I expect to save around 60 dollars a month with a plug in unit because I will not use the central air unit once the window unit is installed.

So for all this work , I will be pocketing around 30 dollars extra a month.

Maybe not worth all that work.. but there is a bonus in the credit rating factor..

ANYWAY.. as I get so easily side tracked these days..

I have also gotten the landlord to finally install ceiling fans for me too.
Maybe 30 bucks is an understatement. Who knowns..

but back to my original question.

Im finding off brands at conns for really great deals. And extended full service warranties for 20-40 dollars for the life of the loan or 5 years. ..

maybe.. it is worth it to get a cheap one?

problem i am having is that I can not find reviews for them.

I see them for sale in a lot of other places, sometimes for as much as double conns price.. ( yes. I know that after 'interest' of 50,000% I will have paid exactly as much or even more then they are sold in other stores.. ) but I dont have enough money on hand to just buy one.
Financing? I can do that. As quickly as tomorrow..

so how can I find reviews for off brands?

I have looked at stores that sell these brands for customer reviews
I refuse to pay consumer reports for a membership
I have gone to the manufactures websites
Searched random forums and have typed in a number of keyword combinations..

should I avoid them?

I could get a Kenmore through conns.. but that may raise my monthly payment to an uncomfortable level and make me break even with my bills then bring me under..

(sigh)
I hate making smart decisions.

I subscribe to Consumer Reports, shewolf, so can access everything on their website. I'd be happy to e-mail you the latest reviews and information from the July '08 issue if you pm me with your e-mail address.

First I'd check out those places Drewdad mentioned, now that you know some more. I'd avoid adding to the conns thing.. but that's me.

I have, and nothing that I need/can use.

But those are like flea markets and garage sales.. Gotta check almost every chance you get.

And I hear you.. loud and clear about leaving conns alone.
I dont WANT to add to that credit.. but. .if I could post my usage on line with out giving away my account information I would.

Just from the 21st of last month to now, my electric bill is already at 100.00

last month i thought it was 120 something. I checked it a few days before billing.

it was 158.
My cats stay in this apartment during the heat of the morning until I cant take it anymore at about 2pm.
It gets to be 90 in here by 11 am.

2 box fans, one pointing at the ceiling, the other helping circulate where ever we are sitting.. do nothing.
Air is at , right now.. 78.
The temp in here is 85 and falling only because the sun is down.

By 1 am or so, there will be no need for ac and I get up and turn it off then.
This ac is not on even a full 10 hours at times.. the problem is that A) it does not stop running unless I switch it off. B) it never cools.

According to my utility history, i am already about 12 dollars (average) higher then I was last year.
Now this very well could be due to the rising gas prices.. I mean..everyone has to pay more for gas so the slightest increase... everyone feels..

But, last year, the ac could reach the desired temp.. and stop.. even for a few minutes.
Now.. it just cant. It is like having an internal fan.. and that is it.

I could lose clients due to this 'recession' .. if I can do it now, while there is a little extra money to be had, im leaning toward getting the ac unit and extending the credit line for a bit.

The Heiarieareres.. what ever brand it is.. that I am looking at, according to consumer reports (Smile) is actually rating very high.

My credit with conns is spotless. and I bet I could walk out with that thing and give no money down. ..
M tv bill is 38 something.. I pay 45-65 every month. just to get alittle off that interest .
I can add 30 and not see a big increase from what I already put out .. AND knock this ac bill waaaay down.

Jillian starts full time day care in a week or so.
Im hanging up the car keys too and going to take the bus to my clients no matter what.

This gas increase and shitty ac unit isnt going to get to MY wallet.. Confused

just throwing this into the mix....

we bought our refrigerator from Conns, a Frigidare, several years ago.

Very energy efficient, made our electric bills went down. We got it on one of those pay off w/ no interest in x amount of time deals.

Mentally, I hate the name Conns (cons), and I wouldn't go out of my way to shop there. In fact I think the only time I was in one was when we bought the refrigerator, and we'd already checked out other stores.

So, it's not a given that it's bad.

I would take mckenzie's kind offer to provide info.

I've been reading along, and it really bothers me how much you're have to put up with.

What is Mr. Wolf saying about all this?

I have gotten a lot of great emails and notes about the brand I am looking at.
Frankly, it has gotten higher ratings then I thought it would.

The TV is on one of those payment plans ......... no interest for two years.....
minimal monthly payment.. etc..etc.

Base cost 500.00 ( wall mount flat screen) I have until this october to pay down the rest of the base cost to avoid interest. It will be paid by then.

I could do the same with the AC too.

Shopping at places like conns isnt ideal. But for me,who refuses to have credit card debt because I see it as absolutely unnecessary and the one reason people can not control their finances ( living outside of your means just because you can!) it gives me the opportunity to keep my credit moving and add to my credit points.
All are important if I ever want to try to buy a house, new car, scooter, commercial business space.. etc.

I decided on this tv because we have very little living space. Wall mount kept our space open while not looking too bad.

if it's gotten good ratings and you can get it cheaper, go for it.

Everyone told us to get a Carrier or an Amana or a Lennox, all brand name well known, ect, ect....

But we ended up with a Goodman. I'd never heard of it but turns out they've been around for a while.

And our ac unit works great and our house ac bill has decreased dramatically from the apt ac bill. AND it was much cheaper.

Don't always think that well known is better.

I dont.
That is why I was asking.

Most of the products I have, that have been around for a while, are off brands.

Sony stuff? Kenmore? I probably have in my possession or have thrown a broken item of each brand name in the last year

ugh

it is 88 degrees in here and the sun is barely up.

Yesterday it topped 99 according to the thermostat.

Im gonna ******* kill that repair man.

I think I give up.. and I may go to Conns today after all.
I really wanted to find a used one, or just give this guy sometime..

but.. even the inside of my fridge feels warm. My cats dont move and we are sticking to the furniture. This is .. uncomfortable.. to say the least

I don't see a problem with an off brand, as long as it has a warranty, and you can take it back to the store within a certain time.

On the other hand, ya'll could head out to the pool or library.

We do spent a lot of time away from home...
but my other job requires me to be in front of the computer , sometimes for hours on end.

I generally work on photos in the morning ( when it is cool) and the evenings avoiding afternoon heat all together.
I cant run the computer here with out AC because it overheats. And the last thing I can afford to replace is the computer. With out it, i have no photography business.
