ABC said on Thursday it will, in conjunction with Don Mischer Productions, create a prime-time awards show honoring broadcast and cable reality programs.

Nominees for the two-hour awards show, set to air this fall, will be chosen by a panel of about 200 people, the network said, and winners will be chosen by the public via Internet balloting.

So which of the reality tv shows gets your vote for which categories?

Best Twist
Most Dramatic
Most Humorous

Doesn't the US have enough awards shows already?

The Emmys
The Grammys
The Oscars
The MTV music awards.
The peoples choice awards
The comedy awards.

How many more parades of arrogant self indulgence does this country need?

I've only watched Big Brother, American Idol, and Survivor, so I couldn't give an informed opinion. I think the Bachelor, and Joe Millionaire and the ones focusing on marriage are heinous. There's another--Who Will Marry my Dad? Gruesome, IMO.

I really think American Idol--though I don't watch it anymore, is a great springboard for aspiring talents. Survivor and Big Bro are fun for me--the sociological and psychological aspects are a hoot--and I think an awards show--to gauge public opinion would be entertaining.

Survivor's production values are way above the others. It's kinda the granddaddy of the genre.

All of these awards shows were established as nice little ads, this won't be any different. (Lightwizard can add more, I'm sure.)

It isn't all that different from many other industries, it's just more visible.

Ever looked at all the different awards for the construction and home decorating industries? How about food service, not to mention all the various sports bowls, parades and tournaments.

Butrflynet, I think the visibility is the thing. I don't object, per se, but I share some of Wilso's annoyance. If they wanted to have a little ceremony on their own, no press releases, no simulcast, that would be something else entirely.

I'm assuming it will be televised -- maybe that's an incorrect assumption.

Just re-read -- "prime-time" generally means "televised." Razz

If people didn't watch something it would not be aired. Fault the audience (and the audience for US awards shows is global).

Never seen anyone at one of those wearing a pair of shoes worth 8 million dollars, just around the corner from homeless children living on the streets.

They don't own those shoes, they're walking billboards for the designers who lend them the clothing for that night. Sort of like all those brand names plastered all over the Olympic athletes and other sports participants.

You might take a look at some of the infamous cooking competitions held in France in some of the poorest farming regions.

Shouldnt it be live or something? Wink

There are a great deal more reality shows actually if you take into consideration the BBC, TLC, Discovery, and Bravo channels so, I think they would have quite a hoot with the nominations, etc.

Do we need another award show? NO.

Is this one I might actually peek in at? Prolly.

True, Quinn.

Great idea about live! And they have to, like, eat bull's testicles before they can accept the trophy! Razz

I haven't seen any of the so-called (ahem) reality shows, but I do wish The Daily Show would win whichever is the most prestigious news award !

"I think these shows Suck, and I wish they were banned from Public Television!" I don't know why they call them reallity shows, when there's no commonsense involved. To me they seem more like Idiotic Shows.

The really good thing about TV..especially if you have cable TV is that you can change the channel anytime you like...and almost everyone can find something they like at some time.....
It might take some clicking but, you know...theres always books

Is there anyone who actually considers that any of these programs have got anything to do with reality? I can't see it.

Just because it isn't your reality doesn't make it not.
