I can't stand reality TV

I can't bring myself to watch it. It is boring, annoying, weak plots, draggy, the actors are usually self indulgent. Did I forget to say trashy?

If was only about attractive guys I would just look at porn. I don't expect drama in porn but I do expect GOOD drama on TV.

@RexRed,
That's pretty much how I feel about all reality TV shows, I can't even imagine what they will come up with next.

Reality TV is for people who don't have enough drama in their real lives.

@RexRed,
I like Survivor and my mom recently got me hooked on Project Runway.

I would like to see the Project Runway idea take on graphic designers, maybe even a few other things, like carpenters, that don't necessarily make one think "design". I think it's interesting to see someone create something out of nothing in a prescribed period of time with a limited budget.

One of the things I loved about photo school was the constant pressure to think about things in a different way so that you could get yourself to see things in a new way. I guess Project Runways reminds me of that. I know I could use a nudge every now and then so seeing others get nudged helps make up for my lack of it.

I like some of the cooking competitions too.

I don't really get the one's like "Real Housewives....." or "Jersey Shore" though.

@boomerang,
That's the key thing I loved about design - playing with a time limit (even if self imposed, but deadlines usually do it for you). Playing (sketching on 'trash') with another designer who both understands where you're heading without tedious explanations and can add to or argue with what you're doing is fun too. Not always, but I've had a few people I could work with in that way. Can be exhilarating. Trading "what if we did this" sentences and sketches - those can take big jumps. If you start, by yourself or as a team, early enough pre deadline, you can evolve several ideas and get stuff from different directions in the sketches - as in use one thought from one plan in another quite different plan. I think some architects still draw outside of computer world but I dunno if that will last. Anyway, the fooling around/playing is the fun part. I have always found that to be a big part of painting too.

How would that kind of dualing or team design be shown on tv? I guess dueling computer drawings.. otherwise cameras would be looking at crumpled 'trash' paper and half done starts of plans. I think getting it worked out for tv, even in a reality show type mode, would really calcify the process.

@ossobuco,
Oh yeh.... those "what if we.....?" conversations are the best!

I still get to have them with Mr. B as we continue to renovate our old house but I don't enjoy near enough creative collaboration in my life right now.

When Mame and I were in bed together (that's another story) we were watching the one about women buying bridal gowns.

After about 5 minutes I was like "What's WRONG with these people?"

It's a damn dress.

I'm so glad to note that most A2kers apparently have at least a modicum of sense. When I saw the headline to this thread, I was afraid that some people would rush to defed this indefensible waste of air time. I still can't believe that some of these shows, e.g. 'Survivor', are actually popular.

@boomerang,
I'd agree - I like some of the "competition" type ones. Almost like a game show or sports event, but you get to know the people a bit more.

I don't like the "train wreck" ones - where you have stupid self-centered people going about their stupid self-centered lives.

@Linkat,
I used to like the cooking ones, but you don't really 'learn' anything about how to cook. It's mostly about the personalities and edited for all the drama. Not a fan of the drama.

@Linkat,
I've barely watched tv at all since I moved to northern california in the late nineties. Kept the tv for when my niece visited or to watch dog shows once or twice a year... oh, and the vcr. So I'm way out of the reality tv loop, except that I do read and can hardly help hearing about them. Some sound more interesting than others.

If you count things like landscape shows on cable, I did watch a few early ones of those, frightenly bad. Did watch and not hate This Old House once in a while. But those aren't what you are all talking about.

@Irishk,
I like to watch the cooking ones when I am working out - really I do - I like the cupcake wars and cake decorating. I just love seeing the finished products.

@ossobuco,
I also like many of the home type shows - home improvement/buying and selling - they are kind of reality shows as it is "real" people.
