25th Anniversary: Hawaii or Tahiti?

Hubby and I will celebrate our 25th in July, and we want to take a special trip. We love islands and have been many places in the Caribbean. But we want to go someplace different this time.

We're taking SonofEva with us. He's 14 and has just gotten his "C" card (scuba certification.) He and Hubby want to dive, but mostly this is an anniversary trip for the two of us. Some sightseeing would be nice, but also good amounts of downtime for relaxing. While they dive, I would either snorkel or look into spa services.

We've narrowed it down to either Tahiti-Moorea-Bora Bora or Hawaii (we'd want to see several islands.) We have 10 days to 2 weeks.

Opinions? Anyone been either place or both?

We could, but it's more fun with him!

Just you wait and see. Taking a four year old is a lot of work. Taking a fourteen year old is a lot of help! Besides, he's a great traveler and good company. We had so many years of traveling alone before he came along. And in just a few short years, we'll be alone again. We're making the most of this.

For many, many years I said I would choose Tahiti if I could take the trip of my dreams. Then I went to Maui. Hawaii was ok (I was 4 mos pregnant at the time -- not the best time to travel) but the flight home was HELL. When we finally landed after a sleepless red eye I decided that "going" somewhere also means "returning" from the same somewhere. I decided I didn't want to go to Tahiti after all.

So --- You should go to Tahiti and report back on how absolutely fabulous it is so that I can get some enthusiasm back for a someday trip. Very Happy

Friends of mine have been to Tahiti - it's beautiful, but similar in vegetation and climate to Hawaii, plus you have to consider that you're being on
the plane for quite some time (1.5 days) until you set foot in Tahiti.

Hawaii is from L.A., S.F. or S.D. a 5 hour plane ride (probably an additional 2 hours from OK), and you can find such nice, relaxing places in Hawaii -
the possibilities are endless.

If it were me, I'd go to Hawaii and forgo the long plane ride to Tahiti.

I, on the other hand, would go to Tahiti and not only because it's French:

Oh yes, I thought the same thing, JPB, and it really does take the fun
out of it, when you have to travel such a long time.

Oh please, Francis - Hawaii can compete with that.

You mean a dumb swimming pool against that lovely piece of ocean?

Pah!!! The ocean is to the right, in case you haven't noticed.
Hawaii is beautiful, especially when you're in one of the resorts where
the waiter mixes you one Pina Colada or Mai Tai after the other....

Besides in July, the ocean is very warm, a cool pool is so much more
enticing.

CJ - I know you have been in Hawaii.

But let me tell you that I've been there too.

And it is an experience that I will not reiterate...

When I checked, one nonstop flight from LAX to Papeete, Tahiti was 7 hours. I'll have to recheck that. And Francis, an overwater bungalow was exactly what I had in mind!

Seems like there'd be more sightseeing and stuff to do in Hawaii, though.

Guess I need to decide if I really WANT more stuff to do. Y'know?

If Tahiti, we'd probably want to see Bora Bora and Moorea, too.
If Hawaii, we'd probably want to see several islands. Which would be best? Anybody ever stayed at a B&B in Hawaii? That might be a nice change from highrise hotels.

If you like to see the volcanoes, Eva, you probably have more to see in Hawaii.

But if you want to relax and see a different country and colorful people, very different from Americans, you should go to Tahiti.

Spend a relaxing time in Bora Bora then make a cruise through the islands..

We rented a house there and it was just perfect. Much better than
staying in a hotel or B&B.

Renting a house sounds wonderful! We did that on St. John USVI for our 10th anniversary.

Francis, I don't want to dredge up bad memories, but I'm very interested in knowing why you didn't care for Hawaii. Too American? Too overdeveloped? I've heard those criticisms before. (I suppose it depends on where you go, though. Usually does.)

Well, Eva, even though it was only my personal experience, I don't think the place it's worth all the fuss people make about it...

Even some beach in the East Coast would do the same...

Sorry...
