More trouble for presidential hopeful: Inquiry by conservative US media outlets reveals that Obama advisor Merrill 'Tony' McPeak is a longtime anti-Israel critic who slammed American Jews for acting against US interests

Yitzhak Benhorin Published: 03.26.08, 01:24 / Israel News

WASHINGTON - General Merrill "Tony" McPeak, Senator Barack Obama's military advisor and co-chair of his presidential campaign is a longtime anti-Israeli critic who has slammed Israel harshly during his career, according to an inquiry by conservative American media outlets.

McPeak, who served as the chief of staff o the US Air Force before retiring in 1994, made headlines over the past week after accusing former President Bill Clinton of McCarthyism. Yet as it turns out, over the years he has criticized Israel for failing to withdraw to the 1967 borders and charged American Jews were preventing American pressure that would lead to a Mideast peace agreement.

The examination of McPeak's career, undertaken by conservative magazine American Spectator among others, revealed that the general adopted a harsh anti-Israeli line in interviews he submitted to and articles he published. According to the magazine, beyond his affinity for alcohol, which saw him detained for drunk driving a year ago, McPeak also appears to take great pleasure in slamming Israel and pro-Israel Jews.

'Large vote in favor of Israel'

In an interview with The Oregonion about five years ago, McPeak argued that the influence exerted by American Jews is responsible for the lack of progress in the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. According to the general the problem was New York and Miami.

"We have a large vote here in favor of Israel. And no politician wants to run against it," he said.

In the same interview, McPeak spoke of his personal experience with Israel.

"I've spent a lot of time in Israel, worked at one time very closely with the Israeli Air Force as a junior officer," he said, "but that's maybe the more cosmopolitan, liberal version of the Israeli population."

McPeak also charged that Jews and Christian Zionists manipulated American foreign policy in Iraq.

"Let's say that one of your abiding concerns is the security of Israel as opposed to a purely American self-interest, then it would make sense to build a dozen or so bases in Iraq," he said.

'Disturbing canard'

Following the latest revelations, the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) called on Obama to remove McPeak as his military advisor and national campaign co-chairman.

"By choosing to have a military advisor and national campaign co-chairman like General McPeak, serious questions and doubts are once again being raised about Senator Obama's positions and judgment on Middle East issues," said RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks.

"Rather than putting the blame where it belongs - on the Palestinian leadership and their continued reliance on terror, General McPeak finds it more convenient to blame American Jewry and their perceived influence," said Brooks. "This is the same dangerous and disturbing canard being promoted by the likes of Jimmy Carter and authors Mearsheimer and Walt in their book, The Israel Lobby."

"Senator Obama continues to surround himself with advisors holding troubling and disturbing anti-Israel bias," Brooks said. "We call on Senator Obama to immediately remove General McPeak from his campaign leadership role and as a key advisor."

Although Obama's advisor had made his anti-semitic speech four years ago. Zionists have brough it out in the open now, and are influencing American Jewish votes. Someone out there are trying their damned hardest to bring down this man.

Check out the Haaretz article.

Equating criticism of Israeli policy with anti-semitism is like OJ Simpson crying racism at those who believe he killed his wife.

blueflame1, you are correct and I already knew that. Sorry, I should have put "anti-semitic" in quotes.

Well, some people seem not be happy with Obama's Pastor. Now it's his military advisor. Oh yes, that comment about finally being proud of her country (his wife's speech) also got a reaction that wasn't positive.

There seems to be a pattern of finding fault with those around Obama. Or, it might just be based on what side of the fence one is viewing Obama and those close to him.

Now remember, most Jews vote Democratic. So, if Obama is the candidate, and many Jews find him not to their liking, will America see a "sea change" of the Jewish vote going Republican? From my mouth to God's ears!

Zippo, of course you knew that. No one on this forum knows better or has been more maligned by slurs of anti-semitism as you. Amazing what Israel gets away with.

I would guess that Christian Zionists also might have a problem with the position of this military advisor to Obama. And, that's a lot more votes than the Jewish population in the U.S. Well, it always gets readers to see an article that claims Jews are up to this or that.

Let's not call it anti-Semitism. It is actually Judeophobia - a belief that Jews might be up to something that's against everyone else's interest (not the 60 million Christian Zionists in the U.S. though).

One thing should be pointed out. Since we are products of a society that socializes us, what "passes" for anti-Semitism (or actually Judeophobia) is really an individual's subscribing to a segment of the "popular culture." Only when the socializing culture is different than the popular culture, like the Evangelical Christian culture, can people be socialized without adopting a demonization of Jews.

So, let's please stop using the label anti-Semite for individuals. A segment of the popular culture is anti-Semitic, since the popular culture is a knock-off from Europe (which was the birthplace of modern anti-Semitism). It is based on the simple belief that what is "good for the Jews" must be "bad for the Gentiles." It is a simple form of mathematical abstraction subscribed to by those that accept that segment of the popular culture.

Foofie, stop using the anti-semitic card. Rip it up and throw it away. Lets make peace.

There is no anti-Semitic "card" (a colloquial term that means nothing or everything).

What do you mean, "Let's make peace"? I was never at war with you. I just see that you have political positions that are 180 degrees opposite of mine, and a number of your views have to do with Zionists, Jews, or American Jews. Yet, many Americans have the same political goals. So, your posts seem to highlight only the preferences of many American Jews? Why not add all the Evangelicals to your postings?

I never called you an anti-Semite. That being said, so many people are alienated from American Jews that a post, highlighting the preferences of American Jews, will get some readers to decide that they should have an opposite position.

Simply put, if you stop making postings, highlighting Jews, and what they might be up to, you won't have to reply to my responses with the false accusation, "Foofie, stop using the anti-Semitic card."

Zippo, stop using the false accusation card!

P.S. Since you have a good idea of who I am, based on my postings, you are still a cypher. I don't know if you are a first generation born American with emotional baggage from some other part of the world, relative to ethnicity, religion, etc. I should therefore add, in the way of constructive criticism, Zippo stop using the anonymous posting card. Let your possible adversaries know who you are, so they may then know if you should be admired, ignored, held in contempt or pitied?

P.P.S. I would call no one an anti-Semite, since I believe it will likely be medicalized in the future as a mental illness (along with other forms of racist thinking).
