MARCH COMES IN LIKE A LAMB ?

EASTERN LAKE ONTARIO
-----------------------------
by march 1 we are looking forward for some signs of spring .
after some brutishly cold nights of BELOW minus 20 C (about minus 5 F) ,
the temperature rose to just below freezing overnight .
woke up to brilliant sunshine ... and about 20 cm (about 8 inches) of fresh snow on the ground . it was quite fluffy and i cleared the driveway in about 15 minutes of easy "snowpushing" .
took a drive down to lake ontario - about 10 minutes to the west-end of the city and it was a beautiful sight !

here we are on lake ontario - near the western edge of the city . the lake is frozen over from the shoreline to wolfe island - about three miles offshore .
(sorry for the phone wire)

looking to the west and the LA MOINE (named after the early french settlers) POINT conservation area .

i imagine the lake will be frozen over for another two to three weeks .
the canadian coast guard icebreaker usually comes up from prescott (near the isenhower-locks on the st. lawrence seway) during the middle of march to start the icebreaking job - it's always a time to rejoice  .

I'm shivering, now. Even though I have the fan on to cool me down.

stopped near the city beach - which is right in the city center - on the right is the old RICHARDSON BATHHOUSE (change-rooms for swimmers in the summer) .

in the distance is WOLFE ISLAND - the largest of the THOUSAND ISLANDS , it's connected to the mainland by a year-round ferry service .
a BUBBLE SYSTEM keeps the ferry channel open in the winter .

no one resting on the bench

one of the MURNEY TOWERS - part of the city's shore fortifications built in the early 19th century - keeps a watchful eye on approaching "enemies" Shocked

(the kingston general hospital is on the right)

a quick walk to the MUSIC PAVILLION - a favourite place for SUMMER ( ) WEDDINGS - and we are heading home again .

That looks like a good old-fashioned hometown winter!

I took painting classes in the old bath house in the winter, around 1968/79. It wasn't insulated - we wore our mittens. The best painting I ever did as a kid was a scene from the gazebo toward the islands to the southwest.

The other summer when Set and I were visiting there were local groups doing dance practice in the gazebo. Great space for them - great entertainment for us.
