@ossobuco,
I remembered Isherwood as living in Santa Monica, my old home territory, and it turns out to be true towards the end of his life -

@dyslexia,
I was in Isherwood's home a few times in the wilds of a Santa Monica canyon and he came to parties at our house in Hollywood in the 50's and 60's and visited us in Laguna Beach a couple of times. This was during the time from1959 to 1962 Isherwood taught as a guest professor at Los Angeles State College (where my closest friend was attending at the time) and the University of California at Santa Barbara. In 1965-66 he taught at the University of California at Los Angeles. With his explicitly autobiographical works Isherwood become in the 1970s a leading spokesman for gay rights. He was one of the first internationally known figures to admit that he was homosexual. Isherwood died in Santa Monica, on January 4, 1986.

I would think there's somebody here who should be embarrassed bringing up his name.

Incredible resolution -- sure looks like the old Arizona Highways photography and reproduction.

@Lightwizard,
Hey, Glight, there is a possibility I may be in both LA and Solana Beach in the early part of November. Very sketchy plans or not even plans at this point. Will let you know if it works out, though, in case we could have lunch one day.

I am not aware of his tenure as professor at University of New Mexico as he lived his american life in california.

He wasn't dys. I was referring to a book by the professor in which those two quotes were used. D.K. Dunaway I mean. Who was an East Coaster. Huxley in Hollywood is the book.

I can't think why you should say that LW.

@ossobuco,
Skipping along, here's another photo from that same flickr poster, Speck in Time. Photo not of New Mexico, but Serbia, with a kind of richness close to my heart.

@ossobuco,
What are of LA? Solana Beach is quite a way for me unless I planned on visiting my friends at Madison Gallery in La Jolla. If that could be for me, we could lunch at the Valencia Hotel. I'm not sure about LA, depending on where in LA -- it might work out with a studio preview if I put myself on the list. If you would be able to make it to Long Beach or Seal Beach, I can think of several places for lunch. I love The Daily Grill at the World Trade Center, Long Beach.

@Lightwizard,
By heck LW--you sure are posh. I'm overawed. I'm going to start calling you the Name Drop Kid. You sure do know how to lard your prose with flattering bullshit.

Have you got an inferiority complex. You do go on a bit about how wonderful you are. Have you not noticed? Basically it is your only topic of conversation.

@Lightwizard,
Hah, my ex lives in San Pedro, but I'll meet him at the Rose in Venice. I've never actually been to Solana Beach, except on the highway of old driving through to SD. But one set of cousins built this house there, which I haven't seen yet. Hope to see CJane and another friend, preferably separately from each other for catch-up reasons, in La Jolla, another old home town of mine, however shortly it was that (like the Valencia, I do - sorta long story - it helps me still like the town).

I may or may not have driving problems (eye stuff, some surgeries between now and then) as well as cash flow mishugas, so this is all conjecture. On LA, I'll be seeing friends/relatives in the Palisades, S.Monica, Mar Vista, and near Wilshire and Crenshaw. May catch a friend in Hermosa, unless I can talk her up to Venice. (I usually hold a kind of court at the Rose, as one can dawdle and I'm comfortable there.)

Then there are my cousins in Lake Forest, which is a maybe, as there seems to be some drama I don't know about going on, cousin wise.
Ah, and one of the Solana Beach cousins' sons lives in, I think, Costa Mesa, another house I haven't seen.

Well, who knows, sounds like a nice mess, but I'll tune it up as time goes by, if I'm actually making the trip.
No pressure, maybe we'll just talk by phone (when did we last talk? You helped me re considering lighting for our gallery. Probably 2000 or 2001).
In fact, you're the one who nagged me to join a2k. So, it's all your fault.

@ossobuco,
I don't know how anybody can talk to an "ex". I couldn't. I've seen long divorced people talking to each other in the pub. It's very odd I think--just acting like they never have met. I'm not very sophisticated I suppose.

Well, not all long marriages that end up in divorce hover in a cloud of hatred forevermore.

@ossobuco,
Not the right phone number unless it's my 949 cell phone number which is still the old Design Forum business number. You can PM me 'cause I've also lost your E mail address when I had a computer crash from allowing my nephew to go on as a separate user (it wasn't his fault, Windows just does crazy stuff sometimes and I recovered everything but E mail addresses 'cause they were on an old floppy and I have no reader now).

@CalamityJane,
CJ, I don't know for sure if I'm making the trip. This is conjecture. If and when, it will be early november, and I'll be in Solana Beach and west LA. I'm just figuring that if I get to Solana Beach, I can meet you and a friend, Jan, who lives not far from where I'm guessing you live. I connive in my mind that I'd stay with her a day or two and also see you. On the other hand, haven't talked with her for a couple of years, and who knows what is going on.

Glad to just meet for a walk or coffee, if we get a chance.

Solana Beach is not far from here, 15 min by car. I'm up on Mt. Soledad,
your friend Jan is close by?

@CalamityJane,
She lives fairly high up, just on the SD border of La Jolla. I don't remember the street name off hand, but I looked where I thought you two were around the time of the fires and thought you lived close, but not immediately. Will have to explore again, as I forget already.
