Why is that (as the media tell it) everyone gets up in arms when Huckabee takes some time off from his presidential campaign to earn money by giving a speech, but no one seems to be complaining when Senators McCain, Obama and Clinton take time off from their elected jobs, that come with a government salary paid for by the taxpayer, to campaign for president?

Perhaps because there are lingering questions as to whether people are paying him to speak as an end-run around campaign finance laws or if they are really paying him to speak as a former Gov. who's just trying to earn a living?

Of course there are also questions about the content of those speeches, who they are being made to, and where they are given as well as whether or not he's still in the race just to bump up his fees for speaking engagements.

But... I don't see any press that is "up in arms" over it. It is unusual that a presidential candidate would put their campaign on hold for a weekend and go make paid speeches. That makes it news justifies news coverage of it.

Oh please. It's not Hillary is spending her own money to campaign, and what about Romney? Even if the money that Huckabee is earning as a speaker is going to his campaign, it can't be peanuts compared to what the others are spending out of their personal bank accounts.

Then why do they keep talking about it anytime Huckabee gives a speech for pay?

Probably because his supporters would like to see him NOT turn himself into a Bill Clinton who pimps himself as the speech-for-pay dude.

Far be it from me to ever say anything on Slick's behalf, but since when is speech-making not a legitimate way to make a living?

The fact is Huckabee, unlike McCain or Clinton (or Obama?) is not a millionaire. He likely cannot afford to campaign for the White House 24-7. In my view this attachment (however thin) to the real world is a point in Huckabee's favor.
