Hello Friends,

I am a native of India and I have applied for Boston College for MBA.

I would like to be more informed about my decision about my stay at Boston City. So can you people please guide me about the lifestyle, job opportunities, accomodation and average salary of people in Consulting domain in Boston?

It will be of a great help for my decisions.

Thanks a lot!!!

ndeo,

welcome to A2k Smile

first of all, it's not called Boston City.
City of Boston, or just plain old Boston is fine (or as it is often pronounced "Bahstin")...

what type of consulting are you in?

to get an idea of what it's like here, here's a few sites:

Boston College is an excellent college to have a degree from. It's not "Ivy league" such as Harvard, however still a very good school. I didn't attend there, so not sure as far as placements.

Boston is a fairly small city compared to some others in the US, but it has some of the best universities & hospitals, so there is a very diverse population living here. And a lot of people with money.

It's also one of the most expensive cities in the US to live in, however that stat is a little deceiving. Living in the heart of downtown Boston is extremely expensive, however you can live 10 minutes outside for "somewhat" reasonable rent. For example, in Brighton & Allston, right next to Boston College, figure you'll pay about $600-700 for a room in a shared apartment per month. Even cheaper if you live in an apartment with 3-4 other people. A one-bedroom probably starts around $1300 and goes up from there. If you plan on having a car, insurance can be relatively expensive, and depending on where you live, parking can be difficult.

Can you tell me how reputed it is in US? As in if I dont get a job there and I shift to California, will I get a good outlook?

Thanks a lot for this info. This is really helpful and gives a good idea of what I can expect there. I will surely go for a shard accomodation to reduce the burden on me. Can you tell me hows the weather in Boston?

Well, today is cold, and there is snow on the ground (it fell yesterday). Today's high temperature will be 39 F, which is 4 C. For the next ten days it'll hover in the single digits, both above and below 0, when you calculate temperature in Celsius.

When I started college here (which was 1979), I learned quickly that you put on long underwear right around Veteran's Day (about November 11 or so) and don't take them off until just about St. Patrick's Day (March 17), give or take a week or two in either direction. Some winters are bitterly cold but without much snow, others are very snowy but hover about 5 to -5 C for a few months.

This winter has been a hybrid. We had a lot of snow in December, which is rare (January is often the snowiest month) and then January was pretty dry and cold. February, so far, is warmer and this was the first real sticking snowfall for the month. But the days are getting longer so there is more melting and the time spent above freezing tends to be longer. I suspect that by March 1 or so we will be done with most of the significantly below freezing temperatures but we may see some more snow. Also, there's often one freak storm in April -- one year it was on April Fool's (April first) and then warmed up so quickly that we had very bad flooding.

I live (with Region Philbis, actually; he's my husband) in Brighton and Slappy is correct re the prices and proximity to BC. It is a nice older area, not too far from public transportation and with an emerging social scene (bars and restaurants are opening up in the area but I haven't seen any Indian restaurants close by though there's a lovely one in Brookline). Indian food here tends to be Northern Indian, at least at the restaurants, obviously at home if you want Southern you'd make it yourself or with help. Groceries are pretty good about carrying ingredients for same, e. g. cumin, coriander, etc. I don't know if you do any cooking but sometimes it's nice to have a little taste of home.

I work with BC graduates and of course they are smart people (my immediate supervisor is a graduate of Boston College), but then again there are a lot of smart people in Boston. Welcome and enjoy your time here! Smile
