Thanks, all. I really do appreciate the concern -- and the nagging.
I tend to keep putting stuff like this off.

Yester day's run was 10 minutes of a moderate pace,
followed by 17 minutes of high intensity,
followed by 6 minutes on cruise control.

Today will be an easy jaunt.

You and most men whom I have known. I'm going to start a thread about this, I think.
Where was I?
Oh, Yeah. Getting ready for Sunday, went to get number and chip and shirt and they gave us a nifty bag and some gels, then I walked to the Park and took a phone call from my friend, Annie, who is down in Florida this week and who reported that she was watching the sunset from a completely deserted beach. It's the off-off-season. But.. the reason I mention this was, while I was talking to her I went up onto the reservior path which I never do because it is sandy and grit gets in my shoes. So, guess what? After the phone call, I put the nifty bag under my arm and start trotting up the roadway to 110th Street thinking that I will swing around the hill part and then head down to 59th but about halfway through that I feel the grit in my shoes. Arrggh. I stop. I take off shoes. Beat the living daylights out of them. Take off socks. Beat the living daylights out of them. Put socks back on. Put shoes back on. AHH relief.
Start running. Go about a mile to the cut-through by the tennis courts. Trot across the Park in the dark. Get all the way to the lake and head up the hill to the subway. Thirty yards from the end, I feel the grit in my shoes again.
Did I mention these are the shoes I was planning on wearing Sunday?

@Joe Nation,
Oooh, the grit sounds muy irritating.

Can you beat the hell out of 'em again to get it out?

Ran Monday, planned to gym Tuesday... didn't. Planned to run Wednesday... didn't. (Raining AND cold -- we decided we were fine with rain if it wasn't also 45 degrees.) Planned to gym Thursday... didn't.

Just ran today and feel soooo much better. Definitely at the point where I get cranky if I don't run enough. (5 laps, good pace, me 'n' trackmom.)

I am so looking forward to Sunday. I have already run this Half Marathon twice so I know it's uphill then downhill then a long flat place. I intend to really push hard through the flats. Then power up the hills to the top and float through the downhill to finish.
That's my plan. Or I will slog through the whole day.

Joe(one or the other)Nation

PS: the griity socks are being soaked right now in the sink.

@Joe Nation,
Thanks Joe and everybody else for the encouragement. I did have a chance to read your comments before I ran the marathon, it helped. I didn't want to come back to this board and have to tell you all that I didn't finish.

Finished in 04:46:54, Overall place #16428 out of a starting field of around 30,000. My place and time don't really matter though; I set myself a goal back in March, one that seemed insurmountable at the time, I put in the effort and I finished.

I have finished a marathon..

It feels really good to be able to say that and cross this accomplishment off of my list.

Despite the satisfaction of simply finishing the race, I am a little frustrated at my time, I was shooting for 10:30/mile, and I ended at 10:57/mile. I will post some more details later (I will be writing about my entire experience back to March for my journal, I'll post relevant bits about the race here soon).

Joe, I hope things went well for you today as well.

I have 309.85 miles on my pedometer. The only problem is I don't know when I started this "trek." ha ha ha...

@maporsche,
congrats, maporsche!

push-up up-date...
i figured i'd be up to about 70 or 75 by now, but gravity seems to have become a hinderance -- i get to 50, and my arms turn to spaghetti... haven't gotten past 55 after several tries.
i may have to re-calibrate my goal...

@maporsche,
Congratulations!!

I still can't get my mind around the enormity of finishing a marathon. The people who manage it impress the hell out of me.

Looking forward to further details from you.

Ran today, me and trackmom, it was tough going but I don't know why. The weather was great (clear, cool). There was a bit of a headwind (as much as there can be when you're running in circles anyway -- coming at us when we did the last 100). Maybe I ate too much over the weekend. But trackmom was having problems too. After our third lap we were both whupped -- we both felt like we'd already done the whole workout. Held on for another two laps tho, five running laps total, seven walking (we walked two laps at the beginning to warm up a bit more -- it was seriously cold, 40-something).

George has got that right.

Way to go, Maporsche. Wonderful accomplishment and yes, I want to read all the details (everyone learns from other's experience.) I LOVE that you are not satisfied, that's a sure sign that there will be another run or two in you.

That's a really good time for a first time, especially since you did all the training on your own. Really remarkable.

Joe(Well done, friend. Very proud of you.)Nation

Of course that's easy for me to say. I've only run one myself. I've been
saying "my first marathon" for 25 years now.

Yesterday I went to see the orthopedic surgeon.
Seems I have bursitis in the right shoulder.
I got a cortisone shot and for a couple of weeks I have to ice it three times a day
and take a couple of advil after every meal.
Also, I'm not supposed to overhead exercise like military press.

But the good news is, I had the best night's sleep I've had in months!

@George,
No more hanging over the edge of the bed?

Take care of the bursitis before it takes care of you. Seriously, good to hear that you went to see the ortho. Sleep without pain is so much easier.

@ehBeth,
Hurray for a good night's sleep.

I've printed this off: http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml

Dunno if I'm gonna do it. Currently, I job about halfway down a nearby long block. Today I was a lot faster, like I had a quantum leap or something, for about half to two thirds of that, then I pretty much couldn't wait to stop (huh? You know what I mean). Hmm.
