Missed my run yesterday.
I was hoping the lousy weather would calm down enough and it did,
but when I open my gym bag in the locker room, I found I had
everything but socks. I have terrible hammer toes, so running sans socks
peels the skin from my toe knuckles. Unpleasant. I opted for indoor
crosstraining with weights.
Today I had socks so I treated myself to a nice run in the cold rain. A
real Ash Wednesday kind of day. (Memento homo, quia pulvis es, et in
pulverem reverteris.)
[Crossed the state line from Rhode Island to Connecticut.
Joe and I are at opposite ends of the Nutmeg State.]
George, Soz--
You inspire me to climb on my trusty exercycle.
Yesterday, two work friends and I took a walk near the office. When we got back, I checked the pedometer. We'd gone about 3500 paces. My step size is about 20" so that's around 1.1 miles. And, we did it in 20 minutes. So -- that's near to 3.5 mph. I used to walk at a rate of 2.5 mph.
Today, no work walk, too rainy (we decided umbrella days are not good for these kinds of walks). Right now I'm dealing with the effects of tossing back a serious amount of water after exercising. So, um, excuse me for a moment ....
12k so far in February.
Ran 4k today.
1 K below 6 min.
Plan for February --
Walk on even days, lift on odd days.
-- shoulders, abs, back, chest
Feb 4 -- treadmill 4.0 miles with varying elevation, 675 calories avg, 66 mins avg
Feb 6 -- biceps, triceps, quads, hamstrings
Feb 7 -- treadmill 4.0 miles with varying elevation, 675 calories avg, 66 mins avg
Feb 1 -- calves, gluts, inner and outer thighs
Feb 2 -- treadmill 4.0 miles with varying elevation, 675 calories avg, 66 mins avg
I'm a bit wambly today, so I'm going to skimp on vigorous exercise.
Cycling isn't vigorous, even with a bit of tension on the wheel.
It was snowing this morning. There were still flurries at noon. From the
top floor of our building (also known as the second floor), it appeared that
the roads were wet, but not snowy. So out I went.
As it turned out, many of the roads were slushy. It is not fun to run
through slush wearing running shoes. Misplaced modifier there -- the
slush wasn't wearing running shoes, I was. More accurately, the slush
and I were sharing my shoes. Running shoes have mesh panels for
ventilation. This is not a good feature in the slush. Kinda like a screen
window on a submarine.
I did three miles and was damn glad to get those wet socks and shoes off
afterwards. A hot shower felt very good indeed.
George--
You are awarded ten extra steps (dry steps) for public and excessive suffering.
Just over three miles (my reservoir run) this morning putting on the virtual run to Canada (and back) just East of Stanford.
What doesn't count: I always have to wait for the train, either the 6 or the A, after a run. In order to stay warm I pace up and down the platform, this morning, just for fun, I measured the distance 785 ft of pacing while waiting. That seemed about an average roundabout sooooo.... 785ft times X number of runs this year, let's say 300, is ,.,.,. about forty miles.
Of course, in the summertime, I don't pace that far, but still..... .

A better day today re water-drinking. One thing I do is try to eat an orange or an apple and if I save it until later it's even more liquid not too long before bed. Today I had the orange at 2 so that was helpful. I've started doing Pete Townshend-style arm windmills while wearing 3-lb wrist weights. Man, that feels like something.
Clothes feel looser. In a month or so, I will probably retire this winter jacket for good (I have another one, one size smaller). A woman of modest means who needs a good winter jacket will then find it at Goodwill and say, "I don't know about the teal color, but it sure is warm."
Joe--
Glad you're resisting the temptation to boost your mileage.
Jes--
As you emerge from your woolly teal cocoon, arms windmilling....
Kid's sick (minorly as sozlet-sicknesses go, but sick), so I won't be able to go to the gym today. Dammit. Some chance that, if she continues to be mostly fine, I can go this evening when E.G. gets home from work and before they close.
I hope it works out, Soz.
I like seeing that "Gymmed!" entry.
Get well, Sozlet!
Finally got in a six mile plus run and it really felt good. There's a half-marathon next weekend, but I am going to skip it. Get some fives in this next week and get a ten in next Friday. I missed doing twenty miles this week by .3 of a mile because I am too dumb to look at the totals before I go to the park.
I am virtually in the beautiful people's town of Darien, Connecticut, still trotting the Boston Post Road as it wiggles around and under US95.

Six! Yeah, Joe!
I'm off to do a planned 4.3.
Soz--
"...and her children will rise up and call her blessed..."
Still, trading off future glory for present exercise is a frustrating bargain.
I'll cross my fingers that the academic and domestic schedules jibe today.
Had a nice easy run in a light snowfall.
[Mystic CT. I have a sudden craving for pizza.]
6 K. today, plus half an hour of weights.
With 81 K. so far in the year, for the first time I'm ahead of schedule for the 750K. year goal.
But I need to make some cushion for vacations, and the Olympics (I know I'll be watching'em till late and no be able to wake up in time for running).
"Nice easy run", says Ironman George, and it's snowing!

Do you people exercize all by yourselves?
I mean, where I run there are lots of people who do it on a daily or nearly daily basis, and we form a sort of club.

When the weather is better, I often run with my co-worker Two-mile Mike.
But he thinks I'm nuts for running outside in winter.
Sometimes I'll run with Jack, another co-worker, but only if I'm feeling
strong. Jack really moves -- and he's even older than me.
