Stradee,
I'm glad I hung in there! I DO get that warm, fuzzy, like I'm doing OK, by them and yet, War is Hell! I'm anti-war, anti-guns, but they keep sending soldiers off to war. The least I can do is make sure this government compensate them and their families for their sacrifice, especially after the Walter Reed scandal!. Cool

I'm thinking I don't have to do that B'Day thing anymore... Very Happy Very Happy

We had a really fast storm pass that tore down huge trees and cut our electricity for a long time. The earth is really being stressed.

It's cleanup time outside - a big tree in our front yard was blown over. It didn't hurt anything except itself. And, lots of limbs everywhere.

Sorry bout the tree, Dan! Must've been a terrible storm! Sad

Erratic weather no doubt. Saw a film called "The Eleventh Hour" talks about how the earth can still recover ~ reusable energy technology available now for reversing the affects of pollution, etc.

Teeny, good news for vets!

Dear Friend,

I am very pleased to let you know that Congress has passed Senator James Webb's G.I Bill, the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act. I have supported this bill since it was introduced and was pleased when it was included in the supplemental appropriations bill that both houses of Congress agreed to. After an initial veto threat, the President now says that he will sign the bill.

The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act expands the educational benefits that our nation offers to members of the military who have served since the September 11, 2001 attacks, very closely resembling the benefits offered to veterans who returned from World War II. It provides full in-state tuition and fees for enrollment in a public college, and a monthly housing stipend and $1,000 per year for books and supplies. People who serve three years would receive the full benefit, while those with shorter service will receive between 40 and 90 percent of the benefit. Benefits can be transferred to a service member's spouse or children.

Since our troops first entered combat in Afghanistan and later in Iraq, they have faced brutal combat and long deployments away from home. Some have experienced grievous injuries. It is altogether fitting that we not just talk about honoring their service, but that we reward and encourage their service. Senator Webb's bill does just that, putting real money on the line for our brave members of the military. I am very pleased that this legislation has become a reality, and I look forward to the same positive national benefits that grew out of the original G.I. Bill.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

More excellent news! Very Happy

Greetings Shirley,

We have very exciting news to share: Ontario's government announced yesterday that it will protect nearly half of the province's vast Northern Boreal forest from industrial development!

This is huge news(¹) -- we're talking about an area half the size of California, or six times the size of Belgium. That's 55 million acres (22.5 million hectares) of the largest intact forest remaining on Earth now protected from development.

With only two operating mines, and few roads, the Boreal is one of the few places left that has not been significantly changed by human activities. It plays an essential role in providing clean water, storing carbon (essential for the fight against global warming), and sustaining ecosystems and communities, including 28 First Nations communities.(²) The Boreal is also home to caribou, wolverine, lake sturgeon and polar bear -- all of which are under threat.

This commitment could not have happened without the support of tens of thousands of allied organizations and ForestEthics supporters like you. Wins this big take an enormous amount of work. Over the last three years, ForestEthics has aggressively campaigned to raise the profile of Ontario's Boreal forest worldwide. We've reached out to more than 500 wood and paper customers including Limited Brands, Staples, and Lowes. We've also supported First Nations opposed to mining on their traditional territory.(³)

Thank you for your hard work and continued support. Our work to protect woodland caribou in the Southern Boreal is not finished, and we'll need your help in the days to come. Together, amazing things are possible.

For the future,
Todd Paglia
Executive Director
ForestEthics

P.S. This amazing commitment was only possible because of the hard work of ForestEthics supporters over the years. Take action now for Endangered Forests.

That's really good news, Stradee. I've flown over some of those areas in Canada above the Arctic Circle and just was awed by the beauty of the land.

All clicked for sumac, Merry Andrew and myself.

that is great news about the boreal forest

it's an interesting area up there

as a friend of mine once asked, is there anything up here other than rocks and trees and water? she was a pretty urban lady - she found all of that undisturbed nature a bit weird

Weird isn't the answer for the far north of our continent. Undisturbed and natural is my thinking. Those things are becoming less and less as people are becoming more and more.

Creaked for sumac, Merry Andrew and me.

Happy Thursday everyone. Very Happy

We are so fortunate to have areas such as Boreal preserved. Understanding the importance of wildlands and wildlife habitat the key, imo.

The fight is worth the goal wildclickers! Very Happy

er, pssst - the Senate has overridden bush's medicare veto

Shocked Very Happy
