Way ta go Teeny! Very Happy

Beth, thanks for asking, hon. Labored

Managed a few outdoor activities today, but decided to stay in and take care of houswork and leave outdoor maintenance alone till the smoke clears. The babies are not faring well either - especially Amanda who's 18 yrs old. Lots of grooming, face washing, and t.l.c for the herd.

Fires breaking out again everywhere - Big Sur got hit today. Firefighters sat and waited hoping the fire wouldn't cross hwy 1 after closing the roadway. God knows if the fire was contained, but it doesn't look good for businesses that depend on tourism, and homeowners burned out when the fire began today.

Very sad for forest critters also. Sad

A bright spot though! A visit from my baby deer {all grown} with twin babies, spots and all. They are so cute Very Happy

unbelievable

More than 1,000 fires, mostly caused by lightning, have burned more than 400 square miles from the Central Coast to the Oregon border, and firefighters are bracing for more lightning strikes that could ignite new fires across Northern California over the weekend.

Areas hardest hit include Butte County, where 31 fires have burned 17 square miles and threatened 1,200 homes; Mendocino County, where 121 fires have burned 42 square miles and threatened 900 homes; and Shasta-Trinity counties, where about 160 fires have burned 55 square miles and threatened 230 homes.

Some 11,000 firefighters from 41 states are battling the blazes. Authorities put the firefighters on notice that they might be abruptly deployed to new fires expected to spring up with new lightning storms already under way.

By Friday, nearly 42 square miles in the Los Padres National Forest destroyed 16 homes in the Big Sur area since it was sparked Saturday by a lightning storm.

Bracing for the next set of storms...

Do you have the emergency supplies, including food for the herd, packed in the car? Is your hose ready? Are you ready?

sue, so far the fires haven't been a problem for where my house is - just a lot of smoke billowing through the pines.

Yep - disaster ready though, just in case.

Stay safe, Stradee.

Years ago when I was flying for the mapping co. in Seattle, I was flying to CA and saw the lightning striking and starting fires as I was traveling over Oregon. It didn't strike like most people think - a quick flash. It struck and stayed on target for quite a few seconds, then after stopping I saw the fire begin. Quite a few seconds for a lightning strike is a LONG time.

Hurray! No lightening!

Still lots of smoke though. Sad

Dan, saw the fire that swept through Mt. Diablo in Contra Costa County begin with one bolt of lightening. Right behind the house, and separated from the mountain by a meadow - we were lucky. After three days of destruction the fire was finally contained. Devastating what a fire does to wildlands, wildlife, and property.

Taking good care.

I am awaiting the experience of the 4th of July here. Kitties do not appreciate randomly occurring strange noises. Thunder storms are not appreciated. They do not like either the predictable continuous noise of a vacuum cleaner, lawn mower, weed wacker, chain saw.

Well stated, sue.

The herds had enough of smoke, chain saws, and noise.

So has Stradee...

Hope everyone has a safe and happy Fourth.

Beth, Happy Canada Day!

Dog Days Begin (July 3)

The Dog Days (a period of 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11) are named for the Dog Star, Sirius, which is visible with the rising Sun at this time of year. Ancients associated this sky picture with the hot days that coincided with it. Sirius is the brightest star in the constellation Canis Major (Greater Dog)

The weather has been perfect for a Canada Day parade and picnic/community party.

Fewer WWII veterans, more Afghanistan veterans in the parade this year. Great respect was shown to all of the veterans as they moved along the parade route.
