Jessica Yellin again on the irregularities -- League of Women Voters is the watchdog organization in question. Sounds baddish.

Massive 60% turnout ( Exclamation ) reported in Pittsburgh - with turnout even higher in the most Obama-friendly parts of town.

Allegheny County, which Pittsburgh is in, should be close, according to the polls...

Allegheny County - Pittsburgh Turnout Huge in Obama Strongholds

According to Pittsburgh political reporting legend Jon Delano, turnout in Allegheny County is likely to exceed previous records, hitting the 60% mark. Interestingly, turnout is notably higher than usual in Penn Hills (high African-American population), East End/East Liberty (high A-A/Obama headquarters), Moon township (part of the Obama-friendly Cranberry exurb), Shadyside (wealthy & liberal) and the North Hills (see Shadyside and Moon).

Kevin Evanto, Allegheny County Director of Communications, reports that election officials expect about a 60-percent voter turnout, hitting the predicted Democratic turnout number and perhaps exceeding it. Evanto stated high higher than normal turnout numbers in Moon Township, Penn Hills, East End, Shadyside and the North Hills.

Oh my oh my.

Won't be able to stay up for this one... shutting down the computer soon.

Worried about those irregularities and where they were (Philly). Whole polling places shut down due to inoperative voting machines, etc. Also problems with the Republicans who changed registration to Dem.

Much more will be clear tomorrow. Fingers crossed!!

"Our biggest problem of the day", said Voter Registration Director Stacey Sterner in the key Lehigh County, "is that the nonpartisan voters cannot vote in a Pennsylvania primary." Apparently, some non-partisan voters failed to get the message that they needed to register with the Democratic party in order to vote for Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton in the primary election.

Same problem "across the state," Sterner said.

Wow - the biggest problem of the day is all the voters who still also wanted to vote for one of the Democrats, and couldnt - if that's the Dems' biggest problem, that must be a good sign for November, no? Smile

Coupla anecdotes from the ground on/via http://progresspittsburgh.net :

"At some precincts in Highland Park, they had beat 2004 General Election turnout by mid-morning!"

"At the Obama staging area that was covering Lawrenceville, Polish Hill, Bloomfield, and Friendship, all of the precincts had been canvassed by early afternoon. The first sign of Clinton canvassers I saw in Lawrenceville was at about 5pm."

"Ja vote jet? I did. I was told they had about as many people before I got there (9:20 a.m.) as they usually do for an entire primary day."

The exit poll data still have it at 52% Clinton, 48% Obama. But Pollster.com's Mark Blumenthal warned just after the polls closed that it was "important to keep in mind" that "the as-the-polls-close estimate for Ohio also had Clinton leading by four points." So an Ohio-style Hillary win is still possible.

Howard Wolfson for the Clinton campaign is sounding pretty defensive about the size of her expected victory..:

Quote:
Obama's advisers said he would have the momentum unless Clinton won by a sizable margin. [But] Howard Wolfson, Clinton's chief spokesman, maintained that the size of any Clinton victory was immaterial.

Targeting his pitch to the Democratic officeholders and other superdelegates who hold the balance of power at the party convention in Denver in August, he said a win was a win.

Obama "didn't come to get 45 percent," Wolfson said in an interview with MSNBC's Chris Matthews. "Fifty [percent] plus 1 is a victory."

"If he can't outright beat us, I think it will once again raise questions for the superdelegates," Wolfson said.
