Hi, I just found this and someother forums to try and find the best way to take care of iron in a house I am closing on soon. The tube, toilet and sinks are all stained as the previuos owner had nothing for a few years.

I will replace much of the plumbing but I want this iron taken care of. I will need some kind of iron filter but have no idea the best one to use. I amgetting a good deal on the house so I can spend alittle but don't want to waste money either.

What tests should I get for my water? Who should I call? The plumbing isn't bad condition and I can do some things myself. I put in a water heater in my house and rpelaced a toilet. Anyway, thanks for your suggestions.

Welcome to the forum.

The first thing you need is a water analysis, and to stop making assumptions like you need an iron filter. You can't know that without water test results unless the water runs orange/rusty.

You can buy a test kit locally or online, take a sample to a lab, call in a local water treatment dealer, send a sample off somewhere etc..

Then post the results here.

In the mean time, do a lot of reading here and on other forums.

Gary,

Thank you. I know there is alot to consider. I will call a couple of local companies that do "free" water testing.

Pay particular attention to the Ph - if it is below 7 you need to elevate it before you move forward with Iron reduction.

I can't speak for other states, but here in Illinois both the state and my county offer free water analysis, and the list of what they test for includes all my concerns. So, before you spend money at a lab or private company, check your city, county, and state with google.

you definetly need to have you water checked. So you know how much iron you have and what the ph is. Because if you iron problem is not to bad a softner can take or it. But if iron is high and you ph is low you might need a terminator. Edit [Moderator]: Link removed

Barry as others have said, have your water professionally tested. There are two types of iron that can be found in your water, one can be reduced by a softner or conditioner (not removed as some have suggested), and one that requires a special filter to remove. Find out which type you are dealing with, and how many parts per million before making a hasty decision on either a softner or iron filter.

Have fun Wink!

Gary, Are you on a private well or a city water system? If you're in a city with public water, they should be able to give you the results of the system water analysis. If you are on a private well, you may be able to get a free water analysis from your county (if you are in the US, that is.)

I have high iron in my water. I don't sweat it though. I just scrape it off every six months. I've made two anvils for my shop and I'm working on a cast iron stove next.

This post had nothing to do with you at all, but as usual, you go around sticking your nose where it doesn't belong. Big suprise there. Anyway, thank you for your two cents. You can shove it up your butt.

I've had over two decades of direct experience with RainSoft products.
I am factory trained to service RainSoft products.
I have sold thousands of RainSoft systems in three different states.

Before John Grayson turned over control and before the company was sold and
resold is was a very reputable company with very good products and service.

Please don't mislead people by telling them RainSoft is wonderful - RainSoft SUCKS!

I'm not misleading a single person. You're is opinion is just that. AN OPINION. I don't care what you think about the company and as stated before, it had nothing to do with you. You were probably let go from the company and just sour about the whole situation.
