More terrible truths about Sesame Street revealed!
The makers of this program certainly have some answering to do!

I thought this was a joke article.
Wrong.
There's actually a panel of people seriously discussing this worrying "issue"! Neutral

You might have thought it was a children's programme. But you were wrong.

Yeah.
Or worse, even!
No punishment would be too harsh.
Poisoning young, impressionable minds like that!
A pox on Big Bird & Elmer!

Seriously, I find discussions like that absolutely amazing.
They seem to actually mean it!

Just curious: are there any more "wholesome" alternative TV programs available for pre-schoolers, courtesy of Fox or other networks?
Ones that folk on this panel would give their stamp of approval to?

Now it's Bert & Ernie's turn. Surprised

It's official: they are just good friends & have no intention of tying the knot.

So stop speculating, you silly Facebook sausages! Wink

Sesame Street's Bert and Ernie 'just friends'

Popular children's program Sesame Street has put to rest rumours that odd couple roommates Bert and Ernie are gay, saying the puppets are just "best friends" and would not marry.

"Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves," the public television program said in a statement.

"Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation."

The move came in response to a Facebook campaign launched by gay rights activist Lair Scott of the northern US state of Illinois asking that Bert and Ernie get married on the program to teach acceptance of gays and lesbians.

"We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful. Only that they allow Bert and Ernie to marry or even add a transgender character to the show," reads an online petition signed by some 7,600 people.

"It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different," it said.

The Facebook page, "liked" by more than 5,000 people, has spawned an extensive online debate on the topic as well as less popular pages calling for the two characters not to tie the knot.

"Not that I want to out them if they don't want to be out, but if they are only hiding it for our benefit and want to openly live their puppet relationship, let's let them," one person commented on the online petition.

"You can't help who you love - and you shouldn't have to."

Others disagreed. "Children at the age of four do not know what sexuality is. Do not pervert a perfectly good children's show. Marrying Bert and Ernie would be so wrong," another person wrote. ...<cont>

I never thought of Bert and Ernie as having sexual thoughts of any sort, when I watched them on a few episodes.

@edgarblythe,
Yeah, I confess to having watched a few episodes of Sesame Street, myself, edgar. Smile

And I never thought those two had the potential for anything untoward ... heterosexual or gay.

Besides, that be rather advanced for 4 year olds, don't you think?

It's rather amazing that the producers of the show felt the need to clear this vexing issue up, in the face of all the Facebook speculation!

What strange times we live in. Confused

Yeah. Batman and Robin had to go through the same kind of misinformation, for probably the same reasons. The idle mind -

Must be.
And folk with a lot of time on their hands.
Pretty strange, though.
Why not just leave the stuff that kids enjoy alone & let the kids have their innocent fun?
I mean, it's not exactly like any child is going to have their sexuality affected by watching Sesame Street or reading Batman comics! Smile

Malcolm Gladwell's 'Tipping Point' had an interesting chapter on Sesame Street and why it works and doesn't work: http://www.gladwell.com/tippingpoint/tp_excerpt3.html

What particularly interested me is he description of Blue's Clues which focuses completely on preschoolers (dropping Sesame Street's nod to adults watching) .

We've never seen had Blue's Clues in Oz. Not sure why.

@hingehead,
Thanks for the links, hinge.
I've had a quick read & will return later for a more leisurely one.

No, I've never heard of Blue's Clues:

Will investigate online later.
Sounds like we've really missed out on something good for little kids here in Oz. I wonder why?

I was actually looking for another Sesame Street "goodnight" song, along the lines of the one the tsar posted to that thread today.

But I got side-tracked ...

This is great! Very Happy
