Diane Sawyer be-littles Mayor Bloomberg as 'Munchkin'

You can make billions of dollars, you can learn how to fly a helicopter, you can get elected mayor of New York, and it's still not enough to stop Diane Sawyer from making fun of your height on live TV.

"As a little munchkin, did you come into New York ever with your family?" she asked Mayor Bloomberg on Monday's "Good Morning America."

"I hadn't thought of being a munchkin at that time, but I guess I was, thank you," the mayor replied.

"I don't believe I just called the mayor of New York a munchkin," Sawyer said, chagrined. "Former munchkin."

"That will work," Bloomberg agreed.

The mayor's spokesman did not respond to a question about his height. He described himself last year as 5-feet-7, though he lists himself as 5-feet-10 on his driver's license.

At a later event with Gov. Spitzer (who is 6 feet tall, according to his spokeswoman), Bloomberg joked about trying to reach a sign in the Times Square subway station.

"The governor can reach it," Bloomberg said. "I have real trouble."

I guess her objectivity has left her.

I think she just meant "when you were a kid" -- "munchkin" is a pretty common term for kids. Probably an unfortunate usage given his height though. Also adding "little" confused things. And the whole thing isn't exactly a tone of a hard news interview.

True, but if a reporter from Fox news had said the same thing, many of those on the left would be screaming bloody murder.

I don't think it was in good taste, joke or not.

So you really started this thread to complain about the left, not about Diane Sawyer?

Diane Sawyer, as a member of the news media, is the left. Apparently.

Not at all.
I think Diane Sawyer showed extremely poor judgement, and I do think she can no longer be considered an objective reporter.
If she wants to be considered an objective reporter, she should immediately make a public apology and admit she screwed up.

However, you cant deny the truth of what I said about if it had been a Fox reporter.

For awkward wording? A bit harsh.

Maybe. From what you posted it seems that Sawyer realized that she had misspoken right after she'd said it, and tried to restate what she'd said.

Bloomberg seemed to have less of an issue with it than you apparently have.

There are nutty people everywhere. If they feel the need to complain about a Fox reporter and, by allegiance, about "all those on the right," for awkward wording of a question, it's up to them.

Likewise, if you feel the need to complain about a reporter for awkward wording and indict "all those on the left" for hypothetical reactions, it's obviously up to you.

Not that I'm saying you're nutty for complaining about such a triviality.
