@msolga,
This week's federal budget didn't exactly offer a lot to the battlers. (Centrelink = unemployment agency.) Neutral :

The Rudd government's sell-out of the Emissions Trading scheme. One of those very rare moments when the Mad Monk (Liberal leader) actually agrees with Kevin. No "great big tax"! Neutral :

The Rudd government's sell-out of asylum seekers from Afghanistan & Sri Lanka (a few weeks ago) ago, in response to the Liberal Party making huge political mileage from yet another scare campaign on the issue.:

Yesterday's AGE featured cartoon.
We all (breathlessly!) await the details of the Lib's budgetary proposals. How will we gain a surplus with reduced taxation, or at least "no big taxes"? Where will the cuts come from? No prizes for correct guesses. It's pretty obvious, yes? Wink :

VIDEO: from last night's 7:30 Report: What is Tony Abbott's (& the Liberal Party's) true position on anything? Are we back to the "core" & "non-core" policies of Howard's rule? Kerry O'Brien grills The Mad Monk & it's almost excruciating to watch him try to wriggle his way out of the pickle he's got himself into. Phew. The question for voters is: can we believe anything he says? :

Meanwhile, the findings of two new polls published yesterday haven't provided any comfort for Kevin Rudd. However, his deputy, Julia Gillard, is gaining in popularity as preferred Labor leader, fueling speculation of a leadership change prior to the election later this year. (Can't see that happening just yet, but anyway ..) The Liberals are still polling well, but it's still very early days for Tony Abbott. When the Liberals' real policies are known to voters I think we'll get a much clearer picture of the Liberals' real chances.

Ms Gillard has cut Mr Rudd's lead from 25 percentage points to just five. (AAP: Alan Porritt, file photo)

The latest Newspoll shows Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has gained support from voters as preferred Labor leader.

The poll published in The Australian newspaper is the first since last week's budget and shows Ms Gillard has cut Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's lead from 25 percentage points to just five.

Mr Rudd's standing as preferred prime minister stands at 45 per cent, down from his level of 57 per cent in February.

Support for his deputy jumped from 32 per cent to 40 per cent in the same period.

The poll also shows the Coalition has maintained its lead over the Government on primary votes, 43 per cent to 37 per cent.

The Opposition has also achieved consecutive 50 per cent or higher on a two-party-preferred basis for the first time in four years.

In a separate Galaxy poll published in The Daily Telegraph, 45 per cent of voters backed Mr Rudd against 34 per cent for Ms Gillard as preferred Labor leader.

The ongoing decline in Mr Rudd's popularity fuelled speculation last week that Labor may move to install Ms Gillard as leader before this year's election.

Ms Gillard laughed off the suggestions.

"Not one individual in the Labor Party has spoken to me [about that]," she said last week.

"I'm focused on my job as Deputy Prime Minister."

Ms Gillard says tough decisions are behind the Government's slide and she still supports Mr Rudd as prime minister.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has told Macquarie Radio he believes he can win the votes of those who are disillusioned with the Government.

"We have to have a government. It will either be a Labor government or a Coalition government, and I think that eventually all of those that conclude that the Labor Government is not up to the task will come to us," he said.

"But what I've got to try to do in the meantime is demonstrate that we will be a credible alternative, that if you change the government life will be different and better."

@msolga,
Damaging fall-out from Tony Abbott's interview on the 7:30 Report last night. (From Michelle Grattan, no less! UhOh! ) I suspect that his honeymoon period as new Liberal leader might now be just about over. And that he might just have to be a wee bit careful about his public pronouncements from here on! I think he might to limited by his minders to saying little more than "No big tax!" for while. Wink :

Abbott admits you can't always believe him
MICHELLE GRATTAN

TONY Abbott has admitted that what he says in the heat of the political moment can't be taken at face value or believed as a commitment.

In a damaging interview last night the federal Opposition Leader made a distinction between an ''absolutely calm, considered, prepared, scripted remark'' and what was said in ''the heat of discussion''.

He conceded that some people would judge him ''very harshly'' for saying earlier this year that he would not increase taxes and then a month later proposing a new tax to finance his parental leave scheme. ...<cont>

I have been following along, Msolga, but not very closely yet. I spent time this evening reading through some of the articles on ABC and others. I always find it difficult to sort out the of cast of characters, the parties and the issues.
I'll be back.
Are we looking at an election in late October?

@realjohnboy,
Around about that time, RJB. Or it has to be by some time in November, if I've got my timing right. (The existing government can choose the date of the next election.)

I'll see if I can find you a link to the list of the major cast members. Wink
