Weird toilet water

Reply Fri 9 Nov, 2007 08:58 am
The surface of the toilet bowl in one of our bathrooms turns black right at the water line in the toilet. A toilet brush works to wisk it clean, but in a day or so the surface is again blackened. The water in the bowl seems clear, toilet flushes fine... what's the problem.

This toilet shares it's drain with a toilet on the other side of a wall in another bathroom. That toilet was taken out and replaced to tile this adjoining bathroom, could that have done it? Also, my wife used one of these toilet bowl cakes a while back... but no longer. The two toilets have been in this configuration all along.... please help.

It sounds to me like there's some mold trying to take hold.
Pour a little beach in the bowl (1/4 cup) when it not going to be in use for awhile. If you get no black stuff, then try pouring a bit in the tank every now and again.

Weird Toilet water
Joe, thanks a lot... will give this a try... when you say it 'won't be used for a while' do you mean hours or days or...? Also this is a teenager's bathroom, and at first I suspected he wasn't flushing, but that is not the case... I will try the bleach this afternoon...

Thanks

Roggie

It's mold/mildew. I have it in my toilet too, only mine is under the rim and I have to put bleach drops in my tank to keep the black streaks at bay.

Weird Toilet water
To all who were kind enough to send a reply... it worked! A little bleach in both the bowl and the tank, and repeating this just once, seems to have done the trick... thanks!

Peace

Some may be interested in this thread on using bicarb and vinegar instead of bleach. (I don't know myself the facts about whether bleach can be harmful to the drains from the toilet to the sewer.)

Most clog removers are just bleach with a little soap in them. I have been known to pour entire bottles of bleach down drains clogged with girl hair. It will discolor metal, but compared to a plumber making a huge mess for $100/hour...I'll take my chances on the bleach.

One thing, if you put bleach or a bowl cleaning agent in the tank, make sure your dog or cat doesn't drink out of the bowl. That would not be good.

This is stupidity on a grand scale. Have you ever heard of a plumbers snake?

I gather some chems can make pvc or pvb, which, dammit, I have here at least in the walls, and probably in the drainpipe, more brittle. I am interested in the vinegar/baking soda thing, since the product of their interaction is acetate (a salt) and CO2.

Have you ever dragged a plumbers snake through a home with light carpet, up the stairs, onto the landing, and into the bathroom... making $1000 of mess... to do what $1 worth of bleach will do...?

Talk about stupid. But, that doesn't surprise me, considering the source. The solutions are so obvious it's stupid, but those on the wrong side of the intelligence line will continue to think Gore won as well....

In case you haven't noticed, plumbers snakes roll up and they can be put in plastic bags. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's good.

I had a good laugh as I pictured him dragging the twenty-five feet of snake from the garage to the upstairs bathroom, all while someone was yelling :What are you doing?"

A2K is getting really old with this unthinking chimpanzee liberalism. They will attack anything - even a good suggestion.

You're all pathetic. F--king losers. Enjoy your stupidity.
