"All previous experiences with the activities of the underground
organizations proved that they flourish in countries with a chaotic
security situation, unchecked borders and the lack of a central government
-- Iraq is all that. It is the perfect environment for fundamentalist
groups to operate and grow."

-- Muhammad Salah, an expert on militant groups and the Cairo bureau chief
of the newspaper Al Hayat, quoted in The New York Times, 13 August 2003
http://www.nytimes.com/2003/08/13/international/worldspecial/13ISLA.html

Under Saddam Hussein, Iraq was a secular society. Saddam had a great fear
of his Islamic opposition and he was brutal in suppressing it. It was the
reason many concluded there could have been no links between him and the
religiously fanatical Al Qaeda.

But now that Iraq is in almost total turmoil, the country has become the
breeding ground, the training ground and the battle ground for Al Qaeda's
"holy war" against the United States.

George W. Bush -- thanks to his simple brain ("war on terror", "with us or
agin us") -- has done just about everything Osama bin Laden could have ever
dreamed of in his quest to destroy the West. Bush has even delivered a
platter of American lives and armour into the terrorists' very own dining room.

I said long ago that the Bushies don't understand Arab culture, history and politics, and they certainly don't understand the various religious sects.

If you want to know the beliefs of those who influence Bush, I recommend my post: What are Neo-Coms?

Ahhh...the law of unintended consequences.

How often it rears its ugly head!

The unfortunate part: We are going to pay the price of Dubya's ignorance -- not Dubya.
