Now: $1,500 flat fee up to $10,000

BUDGET CUTS
What happens next: The taxes didn't fill all the budget deficit gap. The Legislature needs to cut its spending over the next 12 months to make up the difference.

How soon: Legislature has 29 days.
What might be cut:
Aid to Michigan's community colleges and 15 public universities may be frozen.
Medicaid costs, by tightening eligibility, possibly eliminating 19- and 20-year-olds from the rolls.
Medicaid payments to doctors and hospitals.
Welfare, by limiting eligibility to four years.
Rescinding a planned 2.5% increase for K-12 public schools.
