Well we have a federal election looming and Cairns is the major city in the electorate of Leichhardt. And Leichhardt is a bellwether electorate (one of two, the other being Eden-Monaro) which has had it's rep on the government benches since 1972 (i.e. if you win a bellwether you win the election).

The previously retired Lib (in 2007), Warren Entsch, is back to save us from Jim Turnour who beat Entsch's annointed successor Charlie McKillop last time round in the 'festival of the gob'.

So the parade of pollies begins. Joe Hockey yesterday strolling down the Esplenade. Tomorrow Jenny Macklin. If Julia comes up I might actually go and wave a flag....

@hingehead,
Oh, just snuck a look at the ComPost while waiting for coffee. Barnaby Choice and Julie Bishop were up yesterday too.

Barnaby in fine form. "ALP regional development policy is BS, ours is much better I assure but I can't tell you anything about it yet". How very Joh Bjelke-Petersen.

Just just you wait and see. Pretty soon you will kill the goose that laid the golden egg. You you just wait and see or pretty soon you will pump the well dry. Time to feed the chooks.

@msolga,
The Cairns Show is as vague as it gets: http://www.cairnsshow.com.au/

Never been in five years. Hadn't even heard of the Ekka until I moved to Queensland.

Let me tell you, what is good for Queensland is good for Australia.
Goodness gracious, I know what you're trying to do.
The greatest thing that could happen to the state and nation is when we get rid of all the media ... then we could live in peace and tranquillity and no one would know anything.

Mrs Hinge woke up at five this morning and said 'cyclone' - we got and checked the BOM site and sure enough they'd issued a cyclone warning 5 minutes earlier for Tasha, only a cat 1 so just a bit of wind and a lot of rain, passed about 40km south of us, by 10am conditions were light overcast and the cyclone called an ex-cyclone, poor Tasha, just three hours of glory. Mrs Hinge says it was the silence of the birds that must have twigged her spider sense - usually they start at about 3am.

It's nearly 2pm now and I just saw a

@hingehead,
hh, You must come to San Francisco, and drive on 19th Avenue where the lights are sequenced at 35mph. It's one of the best timed lights on one street I have ever driven on, and that street goes to the Golden Gate Bridge.

@cicerone imposter,
Huh?

G'day Hinge

I'll be somewhere around Cairns, end May. Can you lose the cyclones and rain by then, please?

@margo,
I think CI was referring to my comment about Cairns having the worst synched lights in the world back on page 1!

I hope it's nice when you come up to Margo - we didn't get a dry season last year, not one week of clear weather, when usually we get nine months. Fingers crossed!

Yeah, Mrs Hinge has a feeling we'll get three in a row. So far Anthony is going to crap on TVL so we're good for no.1

@hingehead,
Yep, she could well be right. We are expecting up to 7 this season.
TC Anthony heading down toward Whitsundays now it seems.
The next one (Yasi?) looks like may head further south still.
