It is hard for me to think of anything good that the Reps have done, except for getting elected. They have caused great damage to the country, and continue to do so by blocking curative legislation passed by the Dems (who can't, thanks to the Reps, overcome Bush vetoes).
As I learned at a lecture, the South became heavily Republican when LBJ signed the desegregation law in the 1960's. Prior to that there was such a thing as a Southern Democrat. Many Republicans in the South once voted Democratic.
The Republicans just learned how to attract some large constituencies, after gaining that old Democratic South by luck, in my opinion. They learned how to attract the Evangelicals, some of the old Jewish Democratic vote (both Evangelicals and Jews are pro-Israel), the upwardly mobile that want less taxes, and the white ethnics that are against racial quotas and fairly conservative.
Needless to say, the Democratic party got the Gays, pro-abortion folk, they never lost the Blacks and Latinos, and what's left of the Union workers. I shouldn't forget the feminists.
Who's left?
In my opinion, the Democratic Party is starting to look like an upscale coffee cafe? All nice and fine, except that's probably not the current majority in America. Perhaps, the Democratic Party should run a candidate in the EU?

As I mentioned, I predict the demise of the Republican Party as we know it today. Chances are that the party will change, moving to the left.
Then we will have two lovely parties thinking of more ways to build a bigger nanny state. It aint lookin good.
The biggest move towards a "nanny state" has been made by this administration with The Patriot Act. Worse yet, this administration is a nanny with a big stick and no respect for an individual's rights. Even worse - this nanny stole the employer's credit card and is maxing it out by spending billions overseas by telling lies. Worst of all - this nanny is going to leave the post a very, very rich nanny who will never have to work again and will be laughing all the way to the ranch.

And the Dems have done what now? What have they accomplished besides investigate, talk, and talk some more. Nothing, zip, nothing, as far as I can tell. Oh yes, minimum wage increase, yahoo, what a landmark piece of legislation, ha ha. Everybody worth a nickel makes more than minimum wage anyway.
Good to know that in your opinion anybody making minimum wage is practically worthless.
What was the mantra in the '90s? Compassionate Conservatism?
I didn't say they are worthless, just not worth as much. I worked minimum wage when young, but decided I needed a skill to be worth something more. After all, are you arrogant enough to demand a great wage when you have no skills? The minimum wage law is a pretty useless piece of legislation, thats for sure.
I have my own thoughts on the usefulness of the minimum wage, but I was responding to this:
okie wrote:Everybody worth a nickel makes more than minimum wage anyway.
Don't get bent out of shape over "worth a nickel." If you are worth 4 cents, you are worth something. The point is that everybody should try to have a skill beyond entry level minimum wage jobs, which are primarily for people that are entering the work force and are still in process of gaining a more specialized skill or job. If minimum wage was enough to live comfortably, why would anyone feel the need to progress above any entry level job that requires little training or schooling?

The Federalists and the Whigs will be relieved to hear that.
I didn't say we never have. Just that now we never will.
I hope you're wrong, but alas, my confidence is limited. Maybe if a rich Independent like Bloomberg made president in a close three-way race, then started up a party while in office ...?

The only arrogance being displayed here is coming from you who, despite having barely minimal skills yourself as displayed by your woeful ignorant posts here, has the audacity to look down on others.
Honestly Okie! Everyone knows the 17 year old working at McDonalds is as important to society as a neurosurgeon and should be paid an equal amount.
Sorry, you're right, McGentrix. Do I need to go to a re-education camp?

I hope so too. After every set of primaries, I keep thinking that there is a golden opportunity for the popular frontrunner who got ousted by party faithful to start his own party. In 2000, it was McCain. If he had run as an independent or started his own party and brought others from both parties with him, I think he had a real shot. In 2004 it was Dean. Bloomberg might be able to do it too, but it seems to me like party defection is the best chance we have for a viable third party.

Sweet! A McGentrix logical fallacy!
The Dems brought us social security, Medicare, Medicaid, and budgetary surpluses. They brought welfare reform, the graduated income tax, etc.
It is interesting to see here how Reps look down on ordinary people. It so happens that people important in our society include those who wash dishes, prepare food, drive trucks, labor on our roads, etc. They should be treated decently and not disrespected because they didn't take further training, get advanced degrees, etc. Many of these people raise children and don't have the opportunity for further schooling. And, yes, some don't have the scholastic ability. This doesn't make them scum, which is the way Okie and McG view them.

What's even more interesting is how people like you take an inference about minimum wage and make it into a grand production that includes saying such bullshit as "It is interesting to see here how Reps look down on ordinary people."
It's a ridiculous conclusion that you have made and makes you appear, to me at least, to be a blathering idiot.

You've demonstrated in the past that sarcasm is beyond your intelligence level, so it's not surprising at all when it happens again.

In fine form today...good to see you still employing the McGentrix double standard for rational discussion.
