Magna cum laude - do i want to be one?

Reply Sun 19 Aug, 2007 11:39 am
I received an invitation to apply for The National Scholars Honor Society... Not sure how they found me or why, but it's a pre-sorted mailing, thus probably spam...

Still, I went online and looked around. I'd have to pay a one time fee (good for life) and then I'm a member (if approved by their committee)...

What is it? Why should I want to be in? Anybody knows about them? Is it essentially a scam? Or is it worth the $80 for some unfathomable reasons (putting it on a CV...that's about it). Confused

Probably. The National Honor Society services outstanding high schoolers and middle schoolers. Students are selected and proposed by their teacher, and cared for by a NHS chapter local to the school. At least that's what they say on the About us page and the FAQ at the NHS website.

Even if it was genuine, I don't see who would care about a certificate of outstanding highschool performance if you can show them a Ph.D.

Oh, I totally missed the high school part. Well then. No, I really do not need to be an outstanding high schooler.

For $85 you get a really fancy certificate for your wall. Real parchement paper.

Laughing Ok I get it I get it.

Well I had to ask, since I, the foreigner, have been known for getting sucked into vile telemarketing scams. I've been receiving magazines that I'm not reading monthly for four years now. When I tried to cancel, a previously nice representative played me back the recording of our conversation, where I clearly say "Yes" to something... I was just trying to get rid of them. Now I believe noone. Grrrrrrrrrrr.

In that case, you may be interested in buying into these mortage-backed securities I happen to sell. Remember, this fabulous offer is available for a limited time only, so you need to act quickly!

Edit: And don't pay attention to Noddy's post!

Sure, Thomas, it sounds interesting. My first payment of $500 is on its way. I have pre-made checks for $3,000 though. So if you could just send me a check for $2,500, I will send you the one for $3,000... It's 100% safe, I swear.

You should be able to stop those magazines somehow, Dag....

One does get to cancel subscriptions. Four years?

Plus, Glamour decided, for whatever reason to send me a 'promotional' issue every month - i think they must have a glitch in their system for it's been going on for months now... It's free, but Glamour is one of the magazines that irritates me. Invariably, I swear I won't open the damn thing, just toss it in a recycle bin, but I do and something will make me red hot angry in there. What a waste of paper!

I read this morning that all of the teen girl/young women magazines are hurting and several have gone under.

Glamour can send you free magazines and then count you in their advertising pitch, "Your ad will reach so many readers..." Advertising rates pay by the number of readers.

I gather from the article I read this morning that the cluttered look is supposed to remind the readers of 'My Space" pages.

as the TV ads for a new kind of bed , computer aid , medication etc say :
" BUT YOU MUST PHONE NOW !" .
and they'll keep re-playing the same ad day-after-day for months on end ... there must be a lot of suckers out there ! Shocked

It's their way to make a fast buck.

Magna cum laude only means you've a GPA of 3.0. save you $$.

National Scholars Honor Society
Yes. The National Honors Society honors outstanding high school students, the society they are concerned with is the National Scholars Honor Society that honors outstanding students that are attending an institution of higher learning, hence a college or university. You should "google" carefully, and thus you have probably not been invited to be a member of such a society. I would recommend that you join the National Scholars Honor Society, anytime you are presented with an opportunity to acknowledge your academic efforts, I think you should accept, it is "a great compliment" and I don't think it is a rip off or a scam. I am a member and I am proud of my GPA and achievements, aren't you?

Pfffffffffffffft.

So, on magazines, I've had some glorious fights in my past and always won. Don't take magazines lying down....

Meantime, I have to figure out if I actually subscribed at a low moment to Albuquerque for a second year....
