He is arguably the world's greatest living architect. As Oscar Niemeyer prepares to turn 100, he grants Jonathan Glancey in today's Guardian a rare interview - and looks back on an extraordinary career.

Quote:
Niemeyer has had quite a life. Fifty years ago, he began work on the first of his eye-catching civic monuments for Brasilia. This was the stunningly beautiful Alvorada Palace, the official residence of the Brazilian president and a building like no other in the modern world. Newly restored, this diaphanous structure sits on a peninsula overlooking the yacht-studded, artificial Lake Paranoa. It shimmers from the far side of an immaculate, perfectly geometrical lawn. A discreet moat, veils of hummingbirds and a polite modern gatehouse are all that separates this colonnaded building from the rest of Brasilia, one of the most extraordinary cities on the planet.

Well, of course, Mies Van Der Rohe and Walter Gropius, both Bauhaus architects -- Gropius designing the building housing the Bauhaus. The history of that building is, of course, unfortunate. Richard Neutra who designed mostly residential but designed the cyclorama at Gettysburg. Of recent architects in the tradition of the Bauhaus, Richard Meier:

He designed the LA Getty Museum.

Niemeyer is one of the biggest names in modern architecture and I think he will always be up at the top of any list. Hope they try to preserve his legacy
by not tearing down buildings. The Neutra Gettsyburg Cyclorama was in jeopardy and there is a public movement to block the destruction. I'm not sure where that is at right now.
