East St.Louis is supposed to be either the poorest or one of the poorest towns in the U.S.

One morning my brother was driving to work from Belleville,IL to St. Louis,MO. The quickest route was to go through East St Louis. He's driving along and traffic comes to a sudden stop and some guy runs across the street towards a vacant building. Just when traffic starts it stops again and a guy runs after him with a big butcher knife. This is in morning rush hour!
Then one morning I agreed to carpool with him and there was a policeman standing over a dead body on the sidewalk. Couldn't imagine shortcutting through there at night!
Imagine trying to raise a family in that kind of a neighborhood...
