Is it legal for a movie studio to sign an actor/actress to a long-term exclusive contract?

@gollum,
MGM's contracts were legendary, so it's likely legal.

If such contracts weren't legal, they could be overturned in court, which would be expensive for the studios, so they (and the actor & their agent) would surely have lawyers look them over?

@Tes yeux noirs,
roger and Tes yeux noirs-

Thank you.

I think the practice was legal and was called the "studio system" until a major government lawsuit forbade the practice. But when I look it up and only find that the studios and theaters have to be separate.
