Firefly's Lounge has been hiding! Rolling Eyes I finally came across it again today.

National Mutt Dog Day is well and truly over now but fortunately a lot of dogs are still being adopted. Good friends of mine have just adopted a mutt from Serbia. Lots of adoptions of foreign dogs are happening here nowadays - many of the poor creatures are street dogs who've never had much of a life. But societies are starting to crop up with the sole intention of rescuing as many of these dogs as possible. The one my friends are adopting is in England now, being fostered, and she'll go to her new home on 1st November. Going to be a wonderful day for my friends - and for Goldie!

@vonny,
It's wonderful that those dogs from Serbia are being rescued, but aren't there enough dogs already in the U.K. that need rescuing? Anyway, I hope your friends will enjoy their new dog when she finally comes home to them.

Thank goodness someone finally showed up in here--I've been the only one eating the tons of leftover delicious food. Smile

And today is National Chocolate Cupcake Day.

Chocolate and dessert lovers get ready; today is National Chocolate Cupcake Day! This holiday is celebrated each year, across the United States, on October 18.

Cupcakes have also been known to be called:
◦Fairy Cakes
◦Patty Cakes
◦Cup Cakes (different from Cupcakes (one-word)

Cupcakes can be traced back to 1796 when there was a recipe notation of “a cake to be baked in small cups” was written in American Cookery (by Amelia Simmons). The earliest known documentation of the term “cupcake” was in 1828 in “Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats” in Eliza Leslie’s Receipts cookbook.

Cupcakes were originally baked in heavy pottery cups. Today, some bakers still use individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, large tea cups, or other small ovenproof pottery-type dishes for baking their cupcakes.

I've whipped up some with cherries for everyone to try.

@firefly,
Well, those look good.

On dogs, I was sad when an american participant got involved at trying to save dogs at Sochi, promising. I read a few articles about him, and then, nada. I presume regulations and quarantine time were too much.

NATIONAL SEAFOOD BISQUE DAY

For all seafood lovers, a food holiday celebrated each year on October 19 is National Seafood Bisque Day.

Seafood bisque is a smooth and creamy, highly seasoned soup which is of French origin. Based on a strained broth of crustaceans, it is made from lobster, crab, shrimp or crayfish.

It is believed that the name “Bisque” derived from Biscay, as in Bay of Biscay, however the crustaceans are certainly bis cuites, meaning “twice cooked”, as they are first sauteed lightly in their shells, then simmered in wine and aromatic ingredients before being strained.

Guess what's added to today's menu? Wink

I love seafood bisques, but I haven't had a really good one in ages. I personally prefer the type made from one variety, like lobster http://hanoverseafoodmart.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/LobsterBisque.jpg or shrimp http://hostedmedia.reimanpub.com/TOH/Images/Photos/37/300x300/exps27022_DHC1145894D81.jpg

rather than the type that are more like a chowder or that contain a variety of fish and shellfish. And mine must have a definite hint of Sherry in the flavor. I think a rich lobster or shrimp bisque is a perfect comfort food on a chilly evening.

But, if you like seafood bisques, our chef will gladly prepare any variety you prefer to your order. Any takers?

Maybe a small glass of sherry, besides the bit of sherry in the bisque.

@firefly,
Dogs do need rescuing in this country, of course, but one seldom sees a dog roaming the streets nowadays - and if a dog looks hungry or ill-treated, someone will usually report it to the authorities and they'll take action to make sure that the animal's properly cared for. A lot of the dogs from Eastern Europe are feral, all too often victims of torture and brutality, starvation - oh, all sorts of terrible and traumatic stories come with so many of the poor creatures.

As for Firefly's Lounge and some of the food on offer - wow, I've missed it. I don't have a sweet tooth as a rule, but your chocolate cherry cupcakes really made my mouth water!

NATIONAL NUT DAY – October 22 http://nationaldaycalendar.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/0aa53.jpg

This day is NOT about the neighbor that lives down the street or the crazy co-worker, it is a food holiday that celebrates a healthy and nutritious snack. National Nut Day is celebrated each year on October 22.

Nuts are a highly prized food and energy source and are an important source of nutrients for both humans and wildlife. Many of them are used in cooking, eaten raw, sprouted or roasted as a snack food, pressed for oil that is used in cookery and cosmetics.

The fats found in nuts, for the most part, are unsaturated fats including monounsaturated fats.

Many nuts are good sources of vitamins E and B2 and are also rich in protein, folate fiber and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper and selenium.

Nuts are important to animals, especially those in temperate climates, such as jays and squirrels, to name a few, as they store acorns and other nuts during the autumn months to keep from starving during late autumn, all winter and early spring.

Several studies have shown that those who consume nuts on a regular basis are less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease. (CHD) It was in 1993 that nuts were first linked to protections against CHD. Since that time, many clinical trials have found that consumption of various nuts such as almonds and walnuts can lower serum LDL cholesterol concentrations.

One study has shown that people who ate nuts lived two to three years longer than those who did not. The results of the longer life may be due to the fact that because they were eating more nuts, they were in turn, eating less junk food.

Nuts are most healthy in their raw form.

To celebrate National Nut Day, have a snack, or two, of raw nuts during the day

Personally, I'm going to enjoy some pecan pie, even if it is one day late. Smile

NATIONAL BOSTON CREAM PIE DAY – October 23 http://nationaldaycalendar.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/0aa56.jpg

October 23 annually celebrates a chocolate frosted, custard filled cake that is loved by millions across the country, it is National Boston Cream Pie Day.

Even though called a pie, Boston Cream Pie is actually a cake.

In 1856, at Boston’s Parker House Hotel, Armenian-French chef M. Sanzian created this pudding and cake combination which comprises two layers of sponge cake filled with vanilla flavored custard or creme patissiere. The cake is then topped with a chocolate glaze, such as a ganache or sometimes powdered sugar and a cherry.

In 1996, Massachusetts declared the Boston Cream Pie as their official dessert.

Celebrate National Boston Creme Pie Day with a slice of Boston Creme Pie

It's also delish in cupcake form--try one. http://www.amusingfoodie.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/boston-cream-pie-cupcakes-perryville-buzz.png

Firefly, you do know that a firefly can only be seen floating about when they are sending off mating signals, right?

This thread is basically a mating signal, and you don't even know it!

Knowledge - the belly of irony.

@firefly,
I don't know about you, but have you noticed that lounges and places for people to sit and talk are far more electromagnetically predisposed to personal affairs than any other place?

More evidence that lounging may have a subatomic and primitive history behind it. Perhaps back then, our ancestors would sit around just talking and picking out their mate.

I don't know, I always avoided places like this because my brain picked up erogenous vibes from these places. But I never, really put my brain up to figuring out why. Your name actually inspired me to enter this thread, because now I know the answer.

What say you?

@One Eyed Mind,
This is a place to chat. enjoy each other's company, and indulge in calorie-free virtual food.

Today, October 23, 2014 is Swallows Depart from San Juan Capistrano Day!

The famous cliff swallows of San Juan Capistrano leave town every year in a swirling mass near the Day of San Juan (October 23).

@firefly,
This is also a place for erogenous behavior and knowing people intimately.

Well, at least it has the right atmosphere, but you indigenous creatures are able to have a more complicated relationship which does not involve love > **** > leave like other animals. You actually stay with your mate, which means the atmosphere you're in is very redundant.
