When has religion irked you personally and why?

edgar, I agree. These folks that are theists or agnostics think they are superior for some reason. That bugs the **** out of me! Why can't they just accept the fact that their belief is different than ours? This superior thinking on their part is more than "irking."

It doesn't bug me. I don't need a claque of people nodding in agreement with me, for be to be comfortable with my beliefs. If I were the only person on earth to believe what I do, that would be sufficient for me.

It is when the theists attempt to proselytize me, is when I become livid.
I do not appreciate arrogance and supercilliousness on ANY subject, but especially when it comes to religion.

Last week in Brisbane a Catholic priest was sentenced to 6 years in prison for molesting children. The church had previously moved him twice after accusations, but as usual refrained from informing his new congregation. When will they ever stop doing this?

Re priest in Brisbane.

I get a real tickle out of these little episodes. Mutual, non coercive sex play between two persons is doing no more harm than taking a kid for a boat ride or a camping trip.

It is largely the attitudes of the church that made a mutually pleasant activity sinful.

For instance, Take 11 highly sexed boys, Form them into a circle (in the parlance of football called a huddle). Tell them to go out and stop 11 other boys from accomplishing a goal by slamming into them with all their might. Injuries are common in the game. The boys get a certain amount of pleasure out of it. Successful coaches are rewarded.

Take the same 11 boys , form them into a huddle. Announce a "circle jerk" contest. Nobody hurt and the boys get a certain amount of pleasure out of it. But the coach will likely be severely castigated.

Talk about being "hoist by your own petard" Laughing Laughing .

Go figure!!!

Is this the priest?priest molests little girlys
Quote:
Ex-priest jailed for child sex crimes

A 63-YEAR-OLD former Catholic priest was today jailed for indecently dealing with young girls in his former north west Queensland parish. Neville Joseph Creen was sentenced in the Brisbane District Court to three and a half years in jail, suspended after 14 months.

He pleaded guilty to 34 charges of indecently dealing with 20 young girls in the Mt Isa school attached to the parish where he served as a priest between June 1973 and December 1981.

The girls were then aged between four and 13, the court was told.

District Court Judge Ian Wiley said two of the girls were aged six or less at the time of the offences.

The court was told Creen touched them on the chest, vagina and penetrated them digitally, often after he had asked them to sit on his knee.

"You have betrayed your God, your religion, your vows, your parishioners, your friends and each of the girls and their families," Judge Wiley said.

"There is nothing to suggest the girls did anything to invite your misconduct."

Creen had pleaded guilty to the offences but said in a statement to the court on Tuesday his "repulsive behaviour" had been due to his own sexual naivety and his sheltered upbringing.

I don't see anything "harmless" about this guy's actions! Mad

You're right hobitob. Very harmful. The only true punishment for the likes of this sicko is to cut-it-off.
Maybe he'll get a taste of his own in prison. I certainly hope so.

I was irked on behalf of the citizens of Manilla in the Phillipines, when I saw on TV last night that their mayor has banned all contraception & sex education from the city health clinics, on the grounds that it is against life, and the city wants to 'promote the family unit'. He is heavily influenced and reliant on the Catholic church for support whilst in office. A bill to promote contraception is also due to be kicked out of parliament, as the Catholic church has said they will make sure that any MP who supports it will not be re-elected at next year's elections. The population of the Phillipines is around 80million, and is due to double (or similar) in the next 30 years. The Catholic church says that the problem is not too many people, but too few resources.

What?!

You should see the luxury that the head catholic guy in the Phillipines lives in. A marble pillared palace. While many of the people who they don't want to practice birth control live in slums. I just don't have the words to express my disgust.

Some years ago, my husband went to an ophthalmologist who works in a group practice that has a reputation of having very fine doctors. They are all well known as being born again Christians.

My husband's eyes were dilated, and he was being examined by the doctor, who was all the time discussing and touting his religion. I felt that it was a totally inappropriate thing to do. In fact, I likened it to a boss who sexually harrasses an employee. The doctor was in a position of power, and the patient is vulnerable, lying in a chair, with his eyes dilated. We found another doctor.

As you may have read in another thread, I am completely unhappy with the doctor I had been using for the last few years. We went to a top-notch specialist, and asked him for a reccommendation for a general ophthalmologist. Sure enough, he reccommended the "born again" group.
In fact, he DID make a crack about their religious predelictions.

I told my husband that I would not use those people, as I felt that their proselytizing, while a patient was being examined, was inappropriate, and highly unprofessional. It also made me very uncomfortable. He didn't care. His attitude was that if they were good doctors, he would use them, and ignore what they were saying. I felt that they were using their position of power to take unfair advantage of their patients.

What is YOUR "take" on this?

It's a step on from Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on doors to 'spread the word', except that you don't have the option to close your door in their faces when you've paid loads of money for a medical consultation. Which makes it worse.

Giving birth to this thread has made me very happy, my children. Laughing Just catching up. Great stories all around. We're cooking a small duck for Thanksgiving dinner tonight, just the two of us, and my prayer will be thank god I'm not religious.
